hi,

I'm in the market for a really good quality carry on but my budget doesn't allow me to spend the $ I'd like to spend, so I thought I'd try to get a used one. Does anyone have any advice one where I should be hunting? what questions I should be asking?

What information should I have posted here to help you help me?

If you are near one of the factory outlets for what you are looking for you can sometimes (sometimes, not all the time) find some very good deals on last years line, discontinued colors, etc. Be aware that some factory outlets don't include a warranty on discounted items, and it's total hit and miss what they will have, but sometimes there can be very good deals.

We are lucky in that there is a Tumi factory outlet in a outlet mall the wife likes to go to and the Victronix warehouse is a few minutes away and they do twice annual warehouse sales, though this warehouse is not centered around luggage but still has a few pieces each sale.

Well, it would be nice to know what brand and bag type you consider good quality. If you have a TJ Maxx, Marshalls or Ross in your area then they are where I like to get new bags for excellent prices. I am not a Tumi person but have gotten some pretty good bags at the TJ Maxx here in Indy and my Delsey carry on has worked out extremely well for me and only paid about $40usd.

I wish I was near an outlet!!

I'm in Ottawa, ON

We have Winners (like Marshalls), the best they have are a couple of decent Samsonites. I'd really like to get my hands on a really good Tumi or B&R or something similar, but as I said, not able to spend too much $$, which is why I'm trying to get one used...

I'm doing a fair bit of personal travel, short trips 3-4 days up to a week, and hate paying the luggage fees and don't enjoying waiting for my bag

I think a used Tumi is a bit of a needle in a haystack. Most people that buy them do so because they want a good bag for a long time and usually they use them till they are no longer usable. I think you will have to really browse around, garage/yard sales, craigslist, ebay, auction/estate sales, local second hand shops and goodwill possibly. Also, you may consider an "I am looking for" post on Craigslist.

Some people find amazing luggage at thrift stores, especially Goodwill.

If you a close to one, have a look around.

It takes a little work and a lot of patience, but you can sometimes get good deals if you watch Facebook pages, company eBay sites, and outlet websites. I bought a B&R 18" bag for $105.00 at Sierra Trading Post. Today, I'm eying a 29" eBags duffle bag for $125.00, down from its normal price of $250. Today is the presale for people who liked eBags on Facebook. I have a Facebook account that is just for liking companies and the notice came via email.

A few years ago I bought a really nice Briggs & Riley roll aboard on eBay for quite a reasonable price.

I would check out eBay. I know it can seem like a place full of fakes and bad sellers, which is true.

However, if you can sift through all the "BS" you can often time find really good deals. I bought a $375 Tumi tote bag today on eBay for $219.

Just make sure the buyer has good feedback, and also has a good return policy. Make sure that they offer a return label, most will not pay for the return shipping, but still, you get an awesome deal, and you have a couple of days to get the item checked out, make sure it is authentic, whatever. If you are unhappy, just return it.

Also, most of the stuff is new for a good price, the bag I bought today *said* it was brand new. (Guess I will see in a couple of days...)

Most venues have been mentioned by the others already but have you thought about what is possibly the closest solution: asking friends, relatives and co-workers. Maybe (quite certainly) they have some luggage that they are actually eager to get rid off for whatever reason. You do them a favor, you do the environment a favor and yourself by recycling their stuff.

It might even be a great conversation starter on the topic of travel. :)

In addition to STP & ebags, also check Amazon's Outlet (online section) - I got an Eagle Creek rolling duffel for $90 last year - normally around $200. Said it was a return but the bag was NWT and no damage.....

I got a great B&R tote from STP a couple years ago. I don't use it as much as I should - not sure why. Maybe I'll use it for work next week:cool:

Craigslist.

Lots of inexpensive and good luggage for sale.

I bought my first red oxx product from craigslist.

Try searchtempest- this will search mutiple cities in given radius for you.

Searchtempest also searches ebay during the same search.

Good luck!

I just bought a new Briggs and Riley Baseline 21 on eBay at a great price. I was in the market for one for nearly a year before I found it. As others have mentioned, if you search regularly you might eventually find a good deal.

I almost bought the same bag slightly used via Craigslist last year. I got greedy and was trying to get for just a bit less -- it was sold quickly to someone else. At the time I had a couple bags I thought might work, so was did not quite realize how much better a deal that was vs. the other ones. I always look at craigslist first because there are always people who have new or close to new things but are not using them for some reason. Have purchased two other nice bags from people here in LA at an average of 67% off.

All my other luggage has come from Tuesday Morning. They have Tumi every now and then. Perhaps check one out if you travel to the US?

Thanks for the tips!

I picked up a DVF 22" on sale at Winners (Marshall's equivalent) to get me through a couple of short trips while I hunt for a deal on what I really (and make sure that I really CAN learn to travel with just a carry-on.)

In YOW, you can go to:

1) The abandoned luggage place beside the Rideau Centre Mall and across from Les Suite. Assuming it's still there, they also sold off the luggage too.
2) Capital City Luggage. They don't sell used stuff but they have some pretty good prices on many different pieces of luggage.
