Thailand - Postage stamps in Bangkok during Songkran

I have a tradition of sending a postcard to my family from every place I visit for the first time. I'll be in Bangkok for a few hours in Saturday of Songkran. While I'm guessing that I won't have a hard time finding postcards, probably even from the airport, I'm afraid getting stamps will prove a little more challenging.

Would you have any suggestions on how to find stamps for postage to USA and Mexico?

I've been trying to hire a tour guide for the day, and ask her to get me some stamps beforehand, but even hiring a tour guide has been difficult.

The main post office in Bang Rak might be open?

Otherwise maybe ask in a 4/5 star hotel?

Or at the airport? http://www.suvarnabhumiairport.com/indoor_map_post_office_en.php

I looked at the Thai Post website, it looks like the rate for a postcard to the U.S. or Mexico, via airmail, is 30 baht ( ~ $1).

Between ~ 11:00 AM and ~ 7:00 PM you should expect to get wet.

I give my postcards to the Concierge at my hotel, and pay 15 baht for normal cards to the U.S., 20 baht for oversized cards. I believe that they go by air, but am not completely certain. Takes a little less than two weeks to get to Boston, on average.

Ok, I assumed they would be closed because it's Saturday, and a holiday.

I didn't think of that, but if nothing else works, I'll try to stop by the Hilton or Conrad and see if my lowly Gold status helps.

I hope this one is open, even though it's a holiday.

Thanks. It's definitely cheaper than Vatican City State.

I'm kind of expecting that. I'm planning on wearing waterproof or water-resistant clothes and take a shower at the airport. I just need to get a new backpack, and hope that my camera doesn't get wet.

Thanks. That's what I'm doing in Singapore, but I don't think I can do it in Bangkok since I'm not staying at any hotel. I arrive in the morning and leave at midnight.

My last resource would be to appeal to the generosity of the people at the TG F Lounge.

The post office in the back of the BKK check in hall (4th floor/far south-west corner) is open 24/7. Just use that.

I remember sending post cards from BKK during a transit, pretty sure they sell them there.

Is that the one in the transit area? I believe when you go down to it, you have to reclear security because its on the arrivals (pre-immigration) floor. So just be careful of having liquids when going down there.

I'm not aware of any post office in the transit area. Nor for that matter anywhere airside.

The one mentioned in my post is on the 4th floor in back of the checkin area. This is before immigration and security. As OP is planning to leave the airport anyway the security/liquid scenario should have no bearing here.

The link I provided above clearly shows the locations of the two (2) Thai Post post offices, you have to choose the relevant levels, and notice the flashing green envelope: level 2 is air-side, level 4 is land-side.

I honestly don't know for sure if these will be open on April 17, 2012, and if so, what they hours may be open. I sort of assume they will be open, maybe even all day but it only takes one person to not show up for work to throw all assumptions out the window.

Once again, thank you. I hope they are open, otherwise I'll probably stop by the Conrad or the Hilton, as mentioned before.

I'm looking forward to this layover in BKK, even if it's only for 15 hours.

Songkran is not a statutory holiday. Thai post offices are open on Saturdays, and the one in the airport will definitely be open.

I honestly do not know what "statutory" means in this context. Songkhran is a public holiday here in Thailand and public/government offices including post offices and banks are always closed for at least April 13, 14 & 15. This year two substitution days have been added: April 16 & 17. So post offices will be closed April 12 - 17. I asked in my branch today, which is open on Saturdays 8;30 - 1:00 PM (not all are), and they will be closed for April 12 - 17, 2012. (I expect my bank branch will be closed as well, although some branches are open, especially in malls.)

Some post office branches are supposedly open 365 days, I've heard of a few (maybe one in Ramkhamhaeng) and the main post office in Bang Rak is supposedly open 7x24x365 including any/all holidays, I've been there on a Sunday and it was open.

There are also third-party postal services like Mail Boxes Etc with locations in many shopping malls and even BTS (Skytrain) stations, and they sell postage stamps. However whether all of these are open during Songkhran is very much a crap-shoot regardless of what their policy might be. I asked at the MBE in Siam Paragon (basement level) and they said they would be open during Songkhran during normal mall hours.

edited to add: April 6, 7, 8 & 9, 2012 are also official government/bank holidays associated with the funeral of Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana.

FYI, there is a Thai Post Post Office is on level 6, accessible by elevator/escalator at the back of the main passenger terminal building. The staff said it was open 7/24/365.

(I am not sure if there are others within the terminal/concourses? For some reason I thought there was one on level 4 but I did not see one today, maybe that one moved up to level 6?)

I've mentioned previously about the post office on level 4, checkin level, in the southwest corner open 24/7/365.

Pray tell where is level 6? Of course that would necessitate you're not still ignoring me.
