Practical Travel Safety Issues - Global Entry / NEXUS vs. Reckless Driving in CO

Hey guys,
In 2008 I got a reckless driving in Colorado for speeding. I'm a Canadian citizen on a TN1 visa in the US. I'm considering trying to get Global Entry / NEXUS, but I've been reading mixed reports about if you can get it or not with that conviction.
What has been your experience? If I try and get refused, will it make it harder for me to eventually get it later on? Should I even try?
Thanks.

You can try. They will likely can see the background report but its really not a threat to national security. Its worth a shot as its well worth the 100 bucks to cut thru the long lines when arriving back to the us.

My buddy was recently successful securing a Nexus and he was freaked about a reckless conviction, but he was a US citizen and the crime occurred in his hometown.
I think the real problem for most applicants is the Canadian side viewing DUI convictions as grounds for denied entry.
Anyways, lots of luck!

Just be sure you declare it, especially if you were arrested as a result of it. The officers can and will pull up your police records, and if you lied on your application, they will have grounds to deny you membership.
DUI is cause to deny trusted traveler membership. In fact, I believe that Canada denies admission outright to foreigners with DUIs on their record.
You should try. Just make sure to clearly declare it in the application. If you have any details about it (case number, jurisdiction, date, sentence, etc) include it.

You could try for a Nexus card (only $50 compared to $100 for GE), declare the criminal conviction and explain the situation. FYI, might want to go into more detail as CO reckless driving requires more than just speed violation. Also, even if true, try not to explain the reason as the Cop was having a bad day and/or wanted to make your life miserable.

Generally true, and not just for drunk driving. Though if you're talking a single DUI from 10+ years ago that is probably not a deal breaker. Canada includes this under their notion of "Deemed Rehabilitation" (details here) (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/inadmissibility/rehabilitation.asp). The general guidelines are:
You may be deemed rehabilitated, depending on:
* the crime you committed
* how serious the crime was and how much time
has passed since you completed the sentence
imposed for your crime:
* 10 years for one indictable offence
* five years for two or more summary convictions
* whether you have committed one or more crimes and
* if the crime would be punishable in Canada by
a maximum prison term of less than 10 years.
