As long as I continue to hold the Amex Platinum card that qualifies me for the Fairmont PLAT5 promo, is there any reason that I can't charge our room stays to my wife's Amex Gold card and still maintain the promo?
The way I'm reading the terms, it says you have to pay for the five nights "using an American Express Card". It doesn't say my card, and it doesn't specifically say Platinum card.
Since my Platinum Amex earns MR points at the rate of 1.25/$1 on all purchases, but my wife's Gold Amex earns them at 1/$1 with double points at places like hotels, we should collect more points that way.
Thoughts?

You need to have it as a charge on the Amex card Fairmont or Amex does sweep the account my wife's CTO who is Canadian did exactly what you were contemplating, and got Platinum for a month then was knocked back to regular. Although your mileage may vary.

We have both gold and platinum.. but for the Plat5 promo, its clearly a Platinum promo.. so to ensure that you qualify under the Plat5, charge 5 nights to your Aeroplat or Amex Platinum card, otherwise you may not qualify.
I understand that with the personal Amex gold card, you receive double points for travel. Imo, not worth it to cash in on double points, and Plat5. Ensure Plat5 qualification before moving on to collect the double points.

I charge the room the the Platinum card, and the expenses and incidentals to the Gold card.
Once I've got my 5 nights, it all goes on the gold card.

That's a good idea. I've already a few nights complete, so I can make sure I put a couple of my cheaper stays on the Platinum. I should have about 20 stays this year, so I'll make sure I hit the 5 on the plat card to be safe.
I wonder if I can put a deposit on my account at check-in using the gold card, but still pay the balance on the platinum?
I'm not just trying to maximize the total number of points, but am also trying to shift some of our accumulation to my wife's aeroplan account to bring it up to a level at which we can redeem on an upcoming trip for one of the tickets. I seem to rack up points at about 10x the rate of my wife--we don't share the purchases enough!

20 stays? You'll naturally qualify for Platinum anyways. Is your wife an FPC member? Sign her up, and allot her ten stays (if you travel together) so she becomes Platinum, and charge five nights onto your Platinum card and you become FPC platinum.
The front desk will divide up the charges exactly how you want to pay for it. It will take some time, but it can be done.
If its' your Amex account, you can try transferring part of the balance to your wife's AE account (can be done immediately if you have a balance on your Amex points). Amex doesn't usually check the name, in which the Amex points are being transferred to AE. Perhaps this technique, if it works will get you guys over the hump.

Sorry, I should rephrase that. I'm projecting 20 nights this year, not 20 stays. I'll probably only have about 7 seperate stays, so I'd make Premier naturally, but I wouldn't make Platinum without the PLAT5 promo.
I didn't consider transferring my MR points to her Aeroplan? I didn't know you could do that. You don't think it would raise flags with Amex to transfer to one AE account and then change the number to a different AE account?

In this case you are better to wait for Premier certificates, and then asked for Plat5 promo and the Platinum certificates. After you will have both ^

Agreed.
Get your wife a Platinum card, and have her charge 5 nights as well. You can sign her up for her own, or get a supplementary Platinum card, and it will work as well. Imagine, double the benefits.

I hadn't thought about the supplementary card. We didn't want to pay $400 to get her her own card, but $175 for a supplementary card would be worth it for an extra set of FPC certificates.
Just so I understand how this would work...
- I continue to book 5 stays under my name under the PLAT5 code to maintain my existing platinum status for 2013.
- I register my wife for FPC, and book some stays under her name until she reaches Preimier status.
- Get my wife a supplementary Amex Platinum card.
- After receiving her Premier certs, we register her for PLAT5, and then I assume would have to book 5 more nights under her name, or can the PLAT5 be applied retroactively after we ask them?
If FPC grants early recognition of her benefits, we'd end up with 2 sets of Platinum certs and 1 set of Premier certs to use before Feb 28, 2013, and then 2 sets of Platinum certs for the 2013 year? I also suppose we need to complete this early enough in 2012 that FPC still grants the early status recognition, or we won't get the benefit of the extra set of certificates?

Point 1, its 5 nights (not necessarily stays)
Point 2, its 5 nights (not necessarily a couple of stays), but ensure that your have the supplementary Platinum card on hand prior to the stay. FPC will not retroactively credit, nor will the hotel refund and recharge to a desired cc. Charge nights onto Platinum card.
Point 3, Again this should be done prior to staying the nights on point 2
Point 4, Correct, ensure that the certs are electronically posted on FPC online account, before quoting Plat5.. The point you ask to implement Plat5 promo, is the point you become Platinum member and receive certs.
Be sure to choose your Passion certs once you become Platinum. I don't see this advertised clearly, only a banner when you happen to login online.
Be sure on your or your wife's profile the nights are charged to Aeroplat or Amex Plat (offer only good for Canada). Charging to Gold Amex will not count towards Plat5 promo.
