Just back from a long trip in NZ and Australia and noticed --as everyone does-- the extortionate internet charges. As SPG platinum, you won't pay at Starwood hotels (but there are none in NZ at the moment), and in many places you'll find ridiculous charges -- my prize for "most extortionate internet" goes to the Accor hotel at Auckland airport, $14 for two hours (run continuously) with a 200 mb data cap, or $30 for 24 hours with 1 gig cap. Crazy.
But there's a much better way: NZ, and to a lesser extent, Australia, is a place where B & Bs are plentiful, and even for a business traveller generally a better choice than hotels.
Most have internet access, and when they do, its nearly always free. In general, I also found that the service was better than that at hotels.
Don't abuse it though -- generally you're using the host's personal connection, and its plenty expensive for them.
