Hi all, I had booked a flight from the US to Cairo and then booked a separate ticket from Egypt to Kilimanjaro via Ethiopian Airlines. Now Ethiopian changed my return flight. I was supposed to arrive at 1:30AM and then fly out at 3:00AM via KLM back home. They changed the flight to now arrive at 7:30AM. The only flights out of Egypt on KLM/Air France/Delta is at 3AM and 6:30AM. So if I arrive at 7:30AM and miss my 3:00AM flight, what will KLM do? I'm guessing they'll put me the next day's flight, but will they charge me for doing that? Thanks.

So these are totally separate tickets? I am afraid your KLM ticket will be void (=worthless) if you miss the flight, unless this is a fully flexible fare that allows a noshow. I would suggest to either move your flight into Cairo one day earlier, or the KLM flight one day later. And unfortunately that will probably mean a looong layover at Cairo..

By the way, your original itinerary was quite risky as well. 90 minutes for a change in Cairo, on separate tickets, has quite a high risk for a misconnect. And in case of misconnect on separate tickets means you will need to buy a new ticket on the spot..which can easily be double, three or four times as expensive as your original ticket.

1. Read the T&C of both tickets' fare bases carefully. Many xEurope/Africa are valueless if not used as ticketed. No exceptions.
2. You are on separate tix, so KL deals with you as a new pax originating at Cairo. KL as no idea you are arriving from elsewhere.
3. Even if KL might possibly acommodate you, why would you presume that there are seats available on the next day's flight? It could be 2-3 days before there is a seat available and you are on your own for that time.
4. The more likely result here is that if you miss your xCAI flight, you will need to purchase a new ticket at walk-up (full fare) prices which can be 9-10x the cost of the deepest discounts.

Thanks for your answers so far. I guess this is different from the US carriers who would usually work with you to put you on the next flight without penalty.

I'll look into changing one of my flights into or out of Cairo.

"Non-refundable" in the USA almost always means that the value of the ticket less a penalty can be applied to future travel. Waiving the penalty isn't that big a deal. But, European carriers which sell true non-refundable tickets which go to $0 value as soon as you don't board as scheduled are a different story.

This is all particularly important on routes where there may only be one flight a day or perhaps a couple of times a week.
