CommunityBuzz! - 2012 DTW / Ann Arbor Art Fair Do (July 20-22)

Following a 7-year tradition, we're working on putting together the eighth annual event.
Please go to here for some history of the event:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/16235252-post1.html

We've batted this around on last year's thread already and it looks like we've got enough interest to keep this going again this year. In general, this event is about providing an opportunity for miles and points eccentrics and their friends and s.o. to have a fun time attending the Art Fair and having meals together along with some time over the weekend to discuss miles and points tips which has always been very a profitable and fun time.

I'm going to open this up to first canvas others to voice their opinion as to what they would like to do and what times during the week of the Art fair they would like come to Ann Arbor and want to participate in some Do events.

This event is open to all and we will organize events over the weekend depending on the level of interest. Let's at least do Saturday Drinks and Dinner for those coming for the weekend and a Sunday breakfast / brunch.

Thanks to MidTierStatus, we already have the Ann Arbor downtown library free space room confirmed for Saturday Jul 21 from 1 - 5:30 for a time to get together to share travel / miles / points tips. Given the rumblings about more drastic changes to airline frequent flyer programs that many of us may hate, we may really need each's ideas more than ever to get good travel value going forward.

So post away with your thoughts!

Coo1!

BTW, to those who need a place to stay for the weekend, the best current hotel deal I see for AA for our dates for a place that has good reviews is Microtel in Ann Arbor at $65 a night.

If you need a car rental, rates are cheap right now. Last year they kept rising as we got closer to July.

Glad to see the tradition continues!^

I'd like to attend but as of yet am unable to commit.

However, just a reminder that for those in/around NYC if airfares spike, there's always the possibility of an Avios redemption!

LGA-DTW is usually 9000 Avios r/t but with the current AMEX 50% transfer promo, that ticket is now only 6000 (AMEX to Avios) :D

Just a bump to remind folks to post their availability and suggestions for places to eat, things to talk about, other folks to invite, etc.

A good topic to talk about I think:
How do we respond to the changing landscape for air travel and frequent flyer programs?
I can make a case that there may be a lot more value in hotel frequent guest programs going forward than there will be for most airline frequent flyer programs. What do you think?

Not sure a lot of people know about it, but for those flying in if you do not want to rent a car there is another option. The Michigan Flyer bus service from DTW is cheap and takes you to the Briarwood Maill area or downtown AA.

Actually, AATA went in with Michigan Flyer, and the intro rate for AirRide is $10 each way thru July 30.

It will be $12 normally.

http://detroit2020.com/2012/03/30/new-public-transportation-service-connects-ann-arbor-metro-airport/

Go to MyAirRide.com (http://MyAirRide.com).

And the best part for locals is parking is $2 for up to 2 weeks!

I will be getting on a train the Saturday morning of the DO, so I will be unable to attend.

And if you are a senior citizen, $11 R/T. I'm implying nothing about the age of some of our past attendees.

Thanks for the tip! Sorry you won't be able to make it.

Delta's airfare from WAS is $220 throughout the summer right now, sadly, that's a lot better than average these days. Trying to figure out when I should book, it's tough to figure out what the optimum fare will be these days.

I'd also be willing to host the group (up to 20 or so), for a bonfire/hot tub/potluck/miles and points talk one evening if there is interest...

Bump.

Who else wants to come?

Still time to sign up for 138,000 (potentially) Club Carlson points with very modest stay requirements (like 44k to 50k bonus for a single nights stay!) Unfortunately I believe these promos are going to end July 15, so not good for the AAAF week.

May I register as a hopeful? My permanent +1 is finally starting to get interested in this nonsense (she even mentioned doing an MR over the summer!), and I think it would be fun to bring her to this DO as her first as she loves Ann Arbor.

We'll be getting back from a (land-based) trip on the 18th but should be able to make the drive for the weekend.

I am also a new poster to FlyerTalk. I would love to attend the Do in Ann Arbor. I have been playing the points game the past six months or so with mostly credit cards. I never dreamed I could get so many cards and so many points. I already had a free first class trip to Cancun with a Ritz stay and am flying business class to Bangkok later this year all on points. What could be better.

No, we're going a different direction for a non-Amtrak trip pulled by a steam locomotive on a route that doesn't have regularly scheduled passenger service.

We think nothing of traveling several hundred miles to do this type of thing, but info gleaned from FT comes in handy in the planning process.

It would help tremendously if those of you attending the Saturday afternoon get together at the library would post about or PM me about areas of discussion that you would be most interested in talking about - and contributing your own tips on as well. As we have learned in past years some tips are best kept offline and shared in small groups like ours as they tend to quickly disappear once they become more prominent via the internet.

Just to let the attendees know, there is a great area to eat called Marks Carts.

LINK (http://markscartsannarbor.com/)

This is an area set up with 8 different carts (more like trailers), selling really good and varying food. Just ate there for the first time last Friday and really enjoyed it. Will be going back.

The other really cool addition to Ann Arbor is Argo Cascades (http://www.annarbor.com/news/new-recreation-amenity-on-huron-river-in-ann-arbor-is-named-argo-cascades/).

This is near M14 to the north of town, off Argo Pond. Was filled with innertubers last Sunday and very fun. Innertubes can be rented for $10, if you don't bring your own. And wear water shoes.

Being a relative newcomer, not sure that I'd have much to offer that isn't readily available on Flyertalk or the blogosphere. I could possibly offer some tips regarding credit score improvement, for anyone still on the outside looking in at the bank signup bonus offers... Open to any and all ideas for discussion.

You might be surprised how helpful your tips may be to some folks, none of us know everything!

Also, in past years we've often been able to offer prizes to those offering tips voted by the group as most useful. If some folks want to offer up some prizes like drink chits, airline / hotel discount coupons, etc. so that we can use them for prizes, let us know.

I was looking at hotel rates for our weekend and noticed that the Courtyard Detroit Metro Airport Romulus has a $64 rate where they give you a $25 Visa gift card bringing the effective rate to about $40; works for either Friday or Saturday night for those looking for a good deal in the DTW area.

Also, for those that aren't familiar with the Art Fair before that traffic can be quite congested with the fair crowds and numerous closed off streets.

For out of town attendees the cluster of hotels near the Briarwood Mall is one convenient area to stay in. There is a convenient shuttle between Briarwood Mall and the downtown area where the Art Fair and the Panera location for breakfast/lunch, the Library, and the Original Cottage Inn are. Info is in the brochure for AAAF:

However, I noticed that the brochure says that the shuttle bus service will shut down around 7 PM on Saturday meaning those who plan to take the shuttle to the Fair and Do Events will need a ride back to the mall after dinner. Would any of you that might be driving to the Saturday night dinner be able to take folks back to Briarwood after dinner? I'll leave it to more informed Ann Arbor locals to advise as to where parking is likely to be available for the dinner. There is also some info on parking lots in the above cited brochure.

You could also just catch the regular bus back. I think the shuttle ends at 7 because the art fair ends at 6. We've never had to have anyone take public transportation back in the past though.

If public transport was required, you'd take Route 7 from the Blake Transit Center, a few blocks toward Main Street for Cottage Inn.

Thanks for the info. The AA transit website returned a "no service" message, probably because it is not sophisticated enough to list options that require a short walk to get to a bus stop.

We can probably work in something for a shorter segment (you can PM me with a little more detail); I am one of those who does rent cars fairly frequently.

For Sunday afternoon:

Wow - didn't anticipate so many last minute "ticket" sales! (before anyone takes me too seriously, nope we aren't giving out real tickets, just name tags, and there isn't any cost - except for your bill for your restaurant meals)

Folks I don't have time to completely update things now, but it looks like we have hit our limit at the library event - but I'll take additional names for the waiting list through 5 pm EDT Wednesday July 18. There may be some folks who at the last minute can't make it so everyone might "clear for their upgrade" by the time we "take off" at 1 PM. But if you don't clear, will you have to sit quietly in the library outside the meeting room and try to read our lips ;) or go to drinks and dinner early with the others who haven't cleared the list. I do encourage you if you haven't signed up yet to get on the waiting list today or tomorro wif you are able to be flexible with not knowing for sure if you will "clear".

Please, please let me know as soon as possible if you find you can't make it to something you've signed up for. (e.g., thanks k2o for letting us know you can't make it, that makes room for someone else!)

Remember details on the venues are on the first page of the thread. I'll update the attendee list some time in the next 2 days.

This flight is full! No more "tickets" will be"sold"; registration is closed for the library; you can still ask about the meals, perhaps we can still get you space at our table.

Sorry, we are not offering VDB vouchers.

Please check your name for accuracy (sorry it is hard to read, but the order of events from left to right is a registration, OCI, library, and Webers):

Some helpful info from previous posts:

I want to make an offer to the attendees.

There are 3 rooms available in the Detroit airport area that will cost you $28.50 for Saturday night. This offer is not on any public site, it is an offer from me.

Pool, hot tub, work out facility available.

Transport from downtown saturday night:

someone will probably be able to give you a ride but if you need it,

Bikeguy: You could also just catch the regular bus back. I think the shuttle ends at 7 because the art fair ends at 6. We've never had to have anyone take public transportation back in the past though.

If public transport was required, you'd take Route 7 from the Blake Transit Center, a few blocks toward Main Street for Cottage Inn.

Info is in the brochure for AAAF:
http://www.visitannarbor.org/pdf/2012.ArtFairBroch.pdf

Bus service from DTW to downtown or Briarwood Mall area hotels:

Carpool offers from the Original cottage inn Saturday night:

I can take 3 or 4 (in a pinch). My wife has university parking which I'll use

I can give a ride too. I will miss the Panera Saturday morning as I just scheduled a client meeting in Northville...which means I may be late for the meeting at the library...assuming I find parking in time:rolleyes:

Sign me up for the Miles and points discussion and the cottage inn dinner. I can also drive some people back to their hotel after dinner if they're staying in ann arbor.

Having attended the fair yesterday, which was a rainy weekday, parking was bad. For those that have been before, is there a recommendation on where to park? For both the Library and the Panera.

Prefer not to pay $20 like I did yesterday.

Thank you,

If you still need to drive on Saturday, ask other locals about parking ideas, I don't know enough to tell you anything that is likely to be available. There is information on the Art Fair website.

Everything on Saturday is in the same area we'll walk from Panera to the library to the Cottage Inn.

You can take the Art Fair shuttle from Briarwood Mall. Hopefully there will be some others who can give you a ride back after dinner. Otherwise, take the bus 7 as explained abouve or join others to share a cab fare back to Briarwood Mall.

The new underground parking lot next to the Ann Arbor public library on 5th street just opened at $12.00 per entry for all day parking. It is one block from one of the three art fairs. This new parking structure has that new multi-million dollar underground parking lot smell without the urine scent of our other local parking structures (although there is a giant "P" outside to apparently help guide the homeless where to pee in the stairwells.)

Ah yes, I've done mattress runs for others before! I want to stay by the Briarwood Mall this year for convenience though, since I'm flying out soon after everything is over anyway. It looks like I'll get to SPG Gold this year just on a couple of points nights and the rest guarantee rates.

Things have changed around a bit.

I arrive at 5PM friday (in 2 hours approx - i'm currently on LH442 seat 1A).

My brother lives in AnnArbor and is able to give me a ride from DTW to Ann Arbor.

If anybody needs a ride from DTW to AA between 4:30 and 7:00pm please let me know, it will be arranged for you (but you owe my brother a milkshake when we get to ann arbor).

Looking forward to having someone come from such a long way!

(I'd at least remove your phone number after its been up here for a few hours just so it doesn't become too public.)

Please critique this dwbf11 (and olthers):

2 day rental sat. and sun. at DTW, mid-size:
Your Offer Price: $20.00 (per day)
Total Rental Days: 2
SubTotal: $40.00
Taxes and Fees: $17.60
Total Rental Car Charges: $57.60

Could I have done better? Is there a bonus point or mile offer that effectively would make a normal paid rental this weekend a better bargain than this Priceline bid?

Hi
If anyone is interested there is free parking on some of the streets in my neighborhood, but is is about a 20 minute walk to Panerra and 30 minute walk to the library. But is less than 10 minutes to the south university art fair.
I live on Baldwin Ave. (off Washetnaw) 1 block from Hill st. between Cambridge and Wells.
I have walked it many times but will be biking tomorrow because of time issues.
