Very cool!

http://blogs.wsj.com/searealtime/2012/03/23/googles-street-view-service-debuts-in-thailand/

Google Inc. today officially unveiled its new Street View service for Thailand, releasing online a vast collection of panoramic street-level images of the country.

That means that anyone with a Web connection can now view high resolution photos of everything from Bangkok street food stalls to the ornate spires of the city’s Grand Palace. There are also images of the northern city of Chiang Mai and the southern beach resort of Phuket.

Thailand has become the 35th nation to get its own Street View service, and it is just the second country in Southeast Asia after Singapore. Google has been working to map the three Thai locations since September 2011.

Great that google has it too. The press release makes it sound like it's finally arrived, when really sites like http://www.mapjack.com/ had Chiang Mai and Phuket for 4 years already :D

That being said, I love the features.

Yeah, I know I have used some sort of street view application in the past as well. I thought maybe it was Google Earth. But it could have been mapjack.

Google started on this Street View project here in Thailand last September:

So far it seems well accepted but I do expect a few politicians to find some fault, share their indignation that this foreign company is disrespectful and demand a ban. :D

Not sure if this is the right place to mention, but using Google-Maps you can get transportation links on your iphone. (Or computer I guess)

So if you're in Kosahn Road for instance (and have wifi or data), just type in the address (say Patpong). It'll find it. Do directions, click on the bus looking link, and it will tell you where to catch the bus, where to switch, bus numbers, everything.

If you're on wifi, be sure to go thru all the directions to all pieces of the maps load.

I got around BKK using this, and it was an absolute dream! Yeah I know you can take all sorts of cabs, but I hate the cabs and the SkyTrain rocks too.

With Google Maps you can "Cache" up to ten "squares" covering a fair amount of metro Bangkok, or other areas, if a live data connection is a challenge?

Also, while Google Maps with Navigation may still remain unavailable for Thailand, I was able to hack it to work on my Android phone. However, for driving I mostly use a hacked nuvi.

This XDA thread has the details: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007132

(post #497 has the best step-by-step)

I find myself use Streetview on my phone, tablet and even PC quite often.

Hi

can you tell us how to do this ?
can you save it somewhere else than cache so that it will be there when you need it ?

Any platform but probably I would use an iPhone

thanks

FWIW, I have an Android phone...In Google Maps, Settings, Labs, Check "Pre-cache map area", which also details how to save map segments.

There are a lot of other free, trial, hackable and paid map apps for Thailand which have fully downloadable maps, and which may be a better solution?

For very rudimentary mapping Google Maps is fine, and we have nearly ubiquitous 2G, and widespread 3G, so having a live data connection is not an insurmountable challenge.

Thank you very much for highlighting this! It is INCREDIBLE! ^ ^

I confess I had only used the car directions so never even clicked on the public transport (bus icon) option. In addition to buses it does have the BTS, MRT and even SARL schedules available to the routing engine. This would make it infinitely easier to make a selection (City Line, Express/MAS, Express/PTH) at the airport, for example.

I do not think many people are aware of this feature, or the value of it.

Absolutely brilliant.

I have used the public transport on google maps since last year ,

I like how it gives you a time when the bus will come:)

Anyone who has been in Bangkok knows that there is no bus schedule with all the traffic , you can have 3 of the same bus number pass you nose to tail like in Nascar !

But I still like taking the bus .....

I've had a lurk around my home in Thailand and I can see my mum and my family dog :-)

Homesickness kicks in every now and then..
