U.K. and Ireland - DL3 to LHR - best minicab service? Monday AM

I have no doubt that the tube is simple, quick and efficient.

However, wifey and I prefer a cab or minicab with luggage after the overnight flight.

Any recommended services instead of the black cab or hotels pricey suggestion?

Thanks!

Daniel

Daniel,

Regarding a minicab, look at posts here:

Instead of the tube, have you considered the Heathrow Express? 20 minute non stop ride to Paddington station in London. Quicker than a cab and much less expensive.

Not entirely accurate from the DL terminal at LHR. You have to take one train from that terminal to Heathrow Central, then wait for the connecting Heathrow Express, which then is 20 minutes.

All those connections add up. Call it closer to 45 mins.

But I would heartily recommend the HE - much more economical way into central London and there are taxis all over the place at Paddington...

Surely that depends on WackyD's ultimate destination in London?

In anycase there is also the Heathrow Connect which whilst 11 minutes slower is less than 1/2 the price of the HEX

I have used these people before

https://www.heathrowexpress.com/ Single 18.00 (online) 19.00 (At station) GBP, four trains per hour
or
https://www.heathrowconnect.com/ Single 9.10 GBP, two trains per hour M-Sat, one train per hour Sun

It's easy to get a cab from Paddington to your final destination.

Those rates on that site are very reasonable. 40GBP to LHR is a good deal. I assume you have been happy with them?

And now that this thread has been moved to the UK and Ireland board, you're going to have lots of people like me thinking that the question is around a minicab from Northern Darlington (DL3 postcode) to Heathrow.

I would not envy that fare!!

Oh, glad I wasn't the only one!

Actually, fares from that part of the world to Heathrow are surprisingly reasonable (sub-£300).

Obviously no YQ....although at >£1.40 per litre of petrol, it won't be long.

Glad I pay USD and US prices for gas... ;) $1.06/litre is slightly more appealing...

Three of us once did this, Leeds/Bradford airport to Heathrow one evening following a BMI (remember when they did this route) cancellation due to fog, cab just off the front of the airport. It was significantly cheaper than the train.

Back to Paddington. The taxi arrangements have recently (ie last few weeks) been revised. It was always one of the less well done arrangements, now the old cab rank outside platform 1 has been closed (and torn up for Crossrail), and there'a a new area built up above Platform 12, in about the least intuitive place for it to be. Not only that, cabs have to exit north into Bishops Bridge Road (opposite direction to 95% of the journeys), and can't come back down Westbourne Terrace as that is closed for the works as well. Must have added around £5 to each fare.

Any guess on the fare from Paddington to the Mews?

Thanks for the feedback and info all.

I will now work to convince the missus that we should take the train to town and grab a cab.

While we only have one full day in town, I planned a cab ride in there somewhere.

I've tried to read each reference and the HE/HC pages, but could someone walk this southern boy through the transfer from Terminal 4?

As a resident of Atlanta (no viable subway) who has managed to avoid the subway in NYC and DC since becoming an adult, the tram at ATL is probably my most visited rail transit. Though Amtrack from Seattle to Vancouver was awesome a few years ago.

On this trip, we'll (hopefully) take the HE or HC to London, Eurostar to Paris and TGV to Nice. Should be fun.

Thanks!!!

My take is hauling out luggage (carry-on's only) to the shuttle/train pickup at Terminal 4 to the main HE/HC terminal. I assume tickets are bought/collected at this point before travel starts towards Paddington. I assume arrival at the end of the line is obvious and the train is cleared? Then the rush for the taxis begin.

The transfer at Heathrow Central is really the fuzzy bit to me.

I do appreciate your feedback and patience.

I fully endorse taking a cab, whether black or mini, to London after an overnight journey, if London is not familiar to the OP.

However, I disagree with all this Heathrow Express stuff, especially from T4.

If you are going to take public transport, the key question to ask is where you are going. Paddington is not central to tourist London and therefore requires tube connections or taxis. The Piccadilly Line runs straight through tourist London. So although the time on the tube is longer, as often as not the total journey time is actually shorter - and, of course, it's far less expensive. Finally, the time saving is far greater from T4, which is where DL land, because you will need to get a separate train to the Heathrow Express, whereas the tube runs from T4 - should save about 15 minutes.

Just drove past it 30 minutes ago :)

Most people here would say "Victoria", or more precisely "Beeston Place, off Grosvenor Gardens".

£10-15 taxi from Paddington.

I love this site.

I've been hesitant to list it for fear it would be thought of as cheesy or absurdly extravagant.

The wife is excited about it and it will likely be the nicest place we have stayed. Or at least the priciest single night.

If you had one meal in London reasonably close to there, what restaurant would you choose?

Thanks!

Daniel
