Incredible! This misses the Boston vibe in so many ways. First off, these days (2012, not 1955) Dunkin' Donuts is synonymous with Boston. The donut selection is a little off too. Second, nobody in their right mind would ever have chowder and donuts in one meal. Yuck! Dinner and breakfast in one meal? Did they actually visit Boston to research this idea?

You have a valid point. I'm interpreting this menu as a Bostonian. In the US most people would consider donuts as a breakfast pastry to be eaten with your morning coffee. Clam chowder would be a midday meal or first course of the evening meal.

But then I've had fried chicken (dinner) and waffles (breakfast) in Atlanta, which turned out to be a really good combo. Who can say what works?

I think the point I was trying to make is that this menu is to celebrate the new NRT-BOS flights and therefore should attempt to reflect, with reasonable accuracy, actual Boston cuisine. JAL has partnered with JetBlue for connecting flights out of BOS. Guess who JetBlue partners with for coffee? Dunkin' Donuts. One of most popular clam chowders in Boston? Legal Seafoods, which started in East Cambridge. I'm just saying that they could have done a better job reflecting the culture of the destination and partner with companies that make products the JAL pax will actually find once they arrive in BOS.

If this is to market to the Japanese I will assume they've done their homework. But I can see it now, some uninformed tourist will land and look for a Mr Donut, which will never be found. The JAL chowder while likely appealing to the Japanese palate may not reflect what they will actually find in and around Boston. And how is this reflective of BOS? IME it is not.

At the end of the day, Japanese are their main demographic so there's always a tradeoff to serve a Japanese influenced dishes vs something more authentic.

And to view this from the other side, this is a celebration for linking Japan and Boston so this can be viewed as adding Japanese influence to Bostonian's familiar dishes to introduce Bostonians to Japan (or leave them a memory of Japan as this will be only available on ex-NRT flights).

FYI, I believe the chowder is also under the supervision of Mister Donut according to the Japanese version of the PR

Mister Donut was acquired by the corporate parent of Dunkin Donuts in 1990 and is the top donut brand in Japan.
