Hello, I'm trying to figure out which of these has the bigger trunk space, with top down, for a trip to Maui. I can't use the back seat because there will be 2 kids back there...

General comments on these options also welcome, but I need to fit 2 mid-size checked bags (each 18" by 27") and it appears very tight...

Thanks!

~ 9 cubic feet for the Mustang with the top down, basically some very small items.

Haven't rented the C70 so I can't say.

C70 will fit, um, maybe one Roll-on

C70 with top down holds next to nothing. There actually is a little hole between the two back seats which allows a pair of skis to fit in the trunk (extending into the rear seat area) even with the top down.

That said, with the top down, trunk space is fairly limited. I think you could get two carry-ons in there, but I don't know about two checked bags.

OK, an update from the OP. I guess I should have done more of my own research first... sorry!

Turns out the trunks are roughly as follows:
Volvo C70: 32" x 38" x 12" High
Mustang: 23" x 45" x 15" High

So the Mustang is ever so slightly more cubic space. I actually went to a Volvo dealership today and looked at a C70 - it's an interesting design, the hard top flips into the trunk, filling the space on top and the "trunk space" is underneath. The BIG difference is that with mid-sized checked bags, typically 26-30" high, you CANNOT get 2 into the Mustang because the trunk is too short (front to back).

SO - bottom line, I can get 2 checked bags (18" x 27") into the C70 but NOT into the Mustang.

If any of the previous posters have facts to support their data to the contrary, I'd love to hear it. Maybe Hertz has a special C70 model built just for them... :)

My father gave me this rule thirty years ago. It has served me well.

Take half the stuff and twice the money.

So long as you're not headed off for a wilderness adventure with no way to spend, it's a good rule.

My wife has a similar mantra:

"Twice the stuff and ten times the money."

I never check bags, so no. I will say that it was a chore to get the ski bag in through the little hole between the truck and the rear seating area.

When the top folds town into the trunk, it has to be able to get all the way in there or else the car gets cranky. Little things set off its emotional alerts. For example, a freak rainstorm came out of nowhere, so I put the top up at a red light. When I took my foot off the brake (before it was completely done going up), lights started flashing at me. All that to say, make sure your bags will actually fit in there, because it might not take kindly to having you cram more in there than can legitimately fit while having the top down.

Personally I found the C70 a pretty nice ride, I got it at D/FW for a good rate ($40/day upcharge from a $18/day midsize).
