Alitalia MilleMiglia - Alchohol on LAX-FCO-IST

View Full Version : Alchohol on LAX-FCO-IST

Hello,

I am a Delta Skymiles Gold doing a mileage run soon on Alitalia to get to Delta Platinum. I have searched Alitalia's site and google, and can't find answers to these questions:

1. On transatlantic, is all alchohol free in coach? How about the FCO-IST parts?
2. What seats should I be going for as a SkyTeam Elite Plus? The seat guru seat configuration looks wrong for my 777-200 as it only has 9 seats per row, where Orbitz is showing me 10 per row.

Any other tips on flying Alitalia is much appreciated!

Maybe seatguru shows the configuration of those 777 not upgraded, while orbitz retrieves the map of the new configuration.
If economy has 10 seats /rows and there's the eco+ available, then it's a 777 with the new configuration.

Yes, free. I've never flown the FCO-IST segment, but I believe there's no restriction.

You can get alcohol (wine, beer) free of charge on all international flights of any length, and probably on FCO-LIN also. So the alcohol will be available on all of your flights. I'm not sure if it will be available in the open bar on the LAX-FCO flight, but in any case during the drinks service you can ask for one.

All but one 777's are still in the 9-abreast config., however the rest are to be reconfigured over this year, so watch out!

So, is booze free? What is the "open bar" you are referring too? My seat map for my flight is showing 10 seats per row. I assume this is bad?

Alcohol is free - yes. You'll find food better in Y than with DL too

What we don't know is if you will already have a refitted 777, with new seats and better AVOD

All flights are fine on AZ 777 though so whether old or refitted you'll enjoy

When are you planning to do this run? AZ will have the new 777-200 config in June according to what I've read and what booked for my trip from LAX-FCO (I booked in Y+ - A on AZ's site). If you check the flights through DL's site (SkyTeam partner) this will show you if your flight is expected to be the upgraded 777 or the old config.

It is the 3-4-3 configuration. How do I go about getting put into Y when booked in Y through Orbitz? My trip in in November.

You're going to have to call their U.S. operations and request the upgrade - not sure what the fee will be. My Y+ ticket was about $500 more than Y. But this was for a June travel date, so who knows what it will be like for November.

I think I will hold off as I wonder if they will add some kind of benefit for Sky Team Elite + folks? To my knowledge, we are not yet entitled to anything, but wonder if this will change?

For the record, I am not very hopeful, but who knows, a new benefit could roll out as economy comfort is in place in all of Skyteam. If I could get it for $40 each way like on Delta, I would pay it in a heart beat, and still not break 4 cpm....

From what I know, that $40 each way is only domestic and not sure how that applies to Alitalia. In fact, given recent rumors that AF is going to buyout AZ in 2013, I think you would want to look at their Y+ pricing to give you a better idea. I'll tell you this, from everything I've read - AZ's Y+ is identical to AF's - which is a far superior product in every way compared to DL.

Economy plus is free for Gold domestically. It cost $80 regular price for non-medallion on overseas for Delta, $60 silver, $40 Gold, and free for plats and diamonds.

Just a little warning regarding Delta Gold status as SkyTeam Elite Plus. When I flew AZ in January, their system didn't recognize DL Golds as STE+, just STE. This caused problems for me when trying to enter AZ or AZ contracted lounges.

I hope this problem is fixed by now but I doubt it.

Well I would double-check with AZ because for them, DL status seems to mean very, very little. Hopefully that will be changing, but at least for my trip my DL status is getting me nowhere.

Since Alitalia's own top tier elites have no benefits for seating at the time of booking, I wouldn't hold my breath.

The only benefit we have is that we can select exit rows for free during check-in.

Economy+ on Delta is similar to Economy Comfort on KLM, and it's just extra legroom.

Economy+ on Air France and Alitalia is a different, separate cabin, with different seating, some additional service, a toiletry kit, and is not, and will never, be offered for "free" to anybody, obviously.

Alitalia honors Delta status according to skyteam rules, exactly as Delta does with Alitalia status. Would you please elaborate on your remark?

Status perhaps, but not miles - that was my point really. I tried to use DL Skymiles to upgrade my AZ flight and was told I couldn't - even though I can earn Skymiles on an AZ flight. Didn't make much sense to me.

Well, I would not be able to use Skymiles to upgrade a similar delta flight with the same fare class! Has anyone had success upgrading alitalia with Skymiles?

Alitalia does NOT participate in the Skyteam upgrades (so it does not work either way, upgrading on DL is impossible for me). In any case, the full-fare ticket needed for a skyteam upgrade usually costs more than a discounted business ticket.

Exactly

Economy + on delta has nothing to do with "premium economy"

Classica + on AZ have MUCH bigger TV screens, larger seats, much more leg room and separate cabin

NOBODY gets upgraded by right unless you use an AZ upgrade sticker for freccia alata + members

You could luck out and they might sell some last-minute upgrades at check-in kind of like Virgin America does. This is a long shot though.

Usually they don't, they did it a few times reportedly at US outstations, selling Magnifica seats, but that's very unusual for AZ.

You can call and ask for the fare difference to upgrade.

I have flown an NZ 777 in 3-4-3. It was the worst economy experience of my entire life. I will never fly a 777 in that configuration ever again. I'd simply rather not go than be caught in that situation. It is horrible.

I'm flying to Florence for business in May. Company booked me on Alitalia due to the directness of flights....lax-fco-flr. I'm curious to experience AZ in flight service. I understand they have a premium economy section which is slowly being installed on the 777 fleet.

Two years ago, I flew Alitalia JFK to FCO. They give you free beer and wine only. No other libations. Food was decent, but lukewarm. The cabin was in horrendous condition...duct tape to patch the leather seats....seams in the carpet.

It is AZ, so I'm not expecting much. I'm also on the november mileage run to IST.

AZ in Economy is better than most US carriers in Economy. The 777 are okay-ish, the only trouble is that after reconfig the Y section will be 3-4-3 a la Air France.

Tu mi fai ridere. Alitalia non è meglio di U.S. carriers in Y : )

AZ has consistently rated lowest in passenger comfort. For instance, I've experienced only once in my life, the use of duct tape to seal tears in the leather seats.....and yes, it was on a beat up old AZ 772. Also, the cabin crew was distracted and seemed not caring about service, like they're doing you a huge favor by giving you a meal...

AZ's 777 fleet has not been converted yet. They are in the process of this and it will be interesting to report back on what I experience 3-3-3 vs 3-4-3.

I don't understand why EVERY other Skyteam airline allows you to view your reservation online...but not AZ.

I made my reservation through Orbitz, and it does seem that I can see the seats and what is open. Thankfully, my plane looks very, very empty. It does have the 3-4-3 config showing. Looks like I may be able to "buy up" at 24 hours minus to economy comfort for $75 each way which would be a steal if I can.....

Of course you can, here:

https://www.alitalia.com/EN_EN/booking/apvsearch.aspx

Go to the bottom of the page and enter either your booking reference, ticket number or flight and date, and it will retrieve your reservation with details of all your flights. There is a bug that you might get a message in the flight summary saying "the reservation has expired", but please ignore it.

Not true, either: my reservation is by a travel agent.

What often happens, though, is that other agents will give you the PNR of their GDS (say, Amadeus) and not the airline PNR. On some airlines this will work all the same, in the case of AZ and other airlines it won't.

If you are getting the following message:
"Please, look at the following warnings.

the system cannot retrieve a reservation corresponding to the flight {0} at date {1} in your Travel Planner.
Please enter another flight or try a search by reservation"

Then your booking reference or ticket number is invalid or doesn't match the name you put. Try putting in a random number for your booking reference and see if you get the same message.

If you are getting another error message then there is probably a problem with your internet browser or your specific ticket, because the system works fine for me. If you lost your reservation altogether you can call the call centre, or you can stick with your e-mail confirmation if you haven't lost it. In any case arriving at the airport you only need your name and destination to check-in.

I've attempted to get this to work on three different browsers (Firefox, safari and Google chrome)...nothing works! Really, must AZ make it so exhausting to get the simple functionality of viewing a reservation?

The current alert message reads "An error has occurred. There is a problem with the website."

No matter, I have the confirmation email and already selected my seating assignments.

But AZ needs to match other airline websites with functionality and ease of viewing one's reservation!
