Stop and gamble a bit at Biloxi. Lots of choices. Favorites include Hard rock and Beau Revage. Grab a rental car and New Orleans is 1:15 to the west. Head east less the hour to beautiful gulf beaches of Gulf Shores, AL or Pensacola, FL.

If you're not there for business, Bay St. Louis/Gulfport/Biloxi is a gambling town. Here is a groupon for Bay St. Louis to stay at the former Casino Magic if you act really quick:

Seems like a heckuva deal although I haven't been in there lately as I got fired as their customer a long time ago, back in days gone by it was pretty profitable place to hang out.

In the actual town of Gulfport is the Island View which I recommend rather than casinos owned by out of town corporate interests. No point in going to a "chain" like Beau Rivage (MGM Resorts) or Hard Rock unless you're getting a great deal like the one Magic/now Hollywood is offering.

Actually, as mentioned, there are casinos in Gulfport and Biloxi. There's a beach, sort of. And about 10 minutes east of Biloxi there is a small artsy town called Ocean Springs that is great for dinner and drinks.

It's still showing in reverse (GPT-SFO) in April and May, early June. Some dates appear in September, but those appear to require longer stays. I'm not seeing anything past that.

Sorry about that, guys. I was hurriedly posting this before door close on a plane.

In addition to the items posted above, GPT can also be an alternate for MSY (about 1:20 drive to downtown New Orleans).

About the beach: There is a beach but you understand because it is so close to where the mouth of the Big Muddy drops off water into the ocean, here we have more brown water than some of the crystal blue water. It's to me more of a beach for getting a boat to Ship Island or maybe you want to join a shrimping tour or a fishing boat than a swimming beach although I've splashed around in it. For birds: A portion of the beach holds the Least Tern nest area, and you will have no trouble spotting the Least Terns when they're in town for the breeding season, which they may already be there or will be there soon, because they're very aggressive about chasing people off their area. Osprey will almost always be seen if you're looking. For animals: The Marine Life Oceanarium is no more but it is easy to spot Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin pretty near to the beach. Art: The Ohr pottery was evacuated ahead of Katrina and is now back on display at the Ohr-O'keefer museum. I happen to think it's well worth seeing but I realize that Arts & Crafts pottery might not be everyone's cup of tea.

We stay at island view when we go down there. The table minimums are usually lower at night compared to the big boys down the road. The buffet at the Beau Rivage is way better IMO for about the same price. I don't know about the casinos in Biloxi, but I know island view just opened a new pool last fall and is pretty nice. Room rates are always fairly low also. There's lots of deep sea fishing available from the marina right behind Hard Rock in Biloxi too.

Just east of Biloxi is Ocean Springs, a small town and a little further, across the Singing River, is Pascagoula, home of a major shipyard.

Having trouble finding this fare...showing up on the kayak calendar but can't get it booked. Is there an overnight required or can I make a one day turn?
