I'm a newbie to FT, but have been a road warrior for many years with over 1.5 million miles flown between Delta and Continental/United.
I have figured out a number of the many acronyms used here in the forum, but there are loads leaving me scratching my head.
I've searched on acronyms, but to no avail.
It would be great if a glossary of acronyms used was a sticky so new folks could get up to speed on the lingo here.
Thanks.

A set of acronyms are in the current UA/CO forum FAQs.
The issue is also that post 3/3, there are a lot of new ones, replacing
many of the oft-used ones. EQMs are now PQMs. 1P or CO Gold is now PG, if people even use it. At least 1K stayed the same.

the hardest bit, as far as i am concerned, is learning the new jargon. Is there a glossary match thread which i can look at?

Hi everyone,
A friend turned me onto this great site and this is my first post/question:
Is there an existing list of UA FF :-) abbreviations? I have been able to figure-out some (i.e. FA = Flight Attended, GS = Gold Star, CPU = Complimentary Premier Upgrade) but a bunch I'm unable to decipher.
Thanks!

Welcome to FT!, 1NMFlyer
for an acronym decoding try FT Glossary (http://www.flyertalk.com/glossary/) and http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/united-mileage-plus-pre-merger/530635-united-airlines-forum-glossary.html
Some of the newer ones are not in the glossaries yet, but the above should cover many.
BTW, GS is Global Service, the top elite level, by invitation only and driven by your spend level

And another welcome to FT. But "GS" on this board is "Global Services."
Did not know about the UA specific one. Awesome :)

reply and then cancel my post as appropriate.
I am awash in abbreviations, e.g., tod, rpu, etc., and cannot now find an FT glossary other than for airport 3-letter codes which are NOT my concern.
IIRC one sormerly existed.
PM me if you wish, and if easy access isn't readily available--obviously it's not easy for me-- please consider making it so.
Also, in the FAQ, a direct link to the SEARCH option would be generally helpful.
"TIA"---unless that means something other than "thanks, in advance" :(

Here's the link to the PMUA forum Glossary (from the FAQ of that forum):
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/united-mileage-plus-pre-merger/530635-united-airlines-forum-glossary.html
Obviously, much of this is now dated, and at a glance I didn't see Tens of Dollars (TOD), Global Premier Upgrades (GPUs), Regional Premier Upgrades (RPUs), or Complementary Premier Upgrades (CPUs).
Some useful info on newer stuff can be found in the first post here (though not really a glossary):

TOD's?
Tens of Dollars referring to offers to upgrade to the next cabin of service for literally tens of dollars (e.g. $59) when there are still elites waiting for the complimentary upgrade...which CO swore they wouldn't do. But there is growing evidence they are flat out doing it now.
It is now commonly referred to any buy-up upgrade program for the next class of service regardless of cost.

Continental Airlines doing business as United Airlines.
It's a play on all the regional airlines that say something like 'Mesa dba United Express' and is representative of the fact that what we have today is really just the old Continental with a different name. Sort of like how Kmart acquired Sears and then took the Sears name!

A derogatory term for people who fly once a year or less, and are unfamiliar with standard flying and airport procedures and just get in the way of us "more sophisticated" frequent flyers. The term is a reference to these characters:

Granted, I've been GS and currently am 1K, so I know the real acronyms from the days of United. And I've been an occasional lurker for a while.
But the slew of acronyms in this forum (some acronyms made up only for FT) are very confusing and off-putting. How about a stickie with the msot common ones--the serious meaning and the sarcastic meaning.

Not sure I agree it is a derogatory term. Having just dealt with many of them the past few weeks, it is a very apt term. Perhaps an overgeneralization, but then again, don't we lump all GS/1Ks into "gate lice"?

As a 1K my definition of gate lice is quite different. Gate lice are the low status and non-elite flyers in BG (Boarding Group) 5 and above who DNKWIA (Do Not Know Who I Am) and are blocking my way to the plane. :)

Can it be apt and derogatory at the same time??
In any case, there is no way avoid the fact that "Ma and Pa Kettle" is not a flattering way to describe two people in the airport! ;)

This is certainly the definition I've known. Gate lice refers to the people who swarm around the gate in such a manner as to obstruct those whose actual turn it is to approach.

I've found reading the UAMP forum lately you just have to skate over the letters and realize vowels are not necessary to most words. The NMBR of nu ACRYMS per HR is amazing. Including ABBVs and TXT-style stuff along with true ACRYMs. MKS RDing and WRTing FASTR.
Because this is so common in the threads about UA's downward spiral we can blame the death of the English language on J SMSK. Along with causing the end of the world as we know it.

What do you call the Elite then who stands first in line at the Premier Line for up to an hour - as I recently saw in ORD? The other plane was 30 minutes late, and they still stood there.

The fact is that the "new" boarding process at COdbaUA has forced elites to become gate lice themselves to protect their advanced boarding benefit. So while the original form still exists (no status pax slipping through before their BG), they are mostly mixed with many elites now (count me as well). It's a big mess, I truly miss the Red Carpet. :(
