My girlfriend pointed out on a recent visit to one of my homes that two of my closets was packed with luggage. I'm a very FF, but I have enough luggage to equip an entire regional jet full of passengers. I estimate I have around 25 carry-on and accessory bags, and about 15 larger bags spread around my residences and stuffing my closets waiting for my next journey. Sure, I have a set I use most of the time, but occasionally shift to another bag or set. A few sets I will probably never use.
Are you a one set or one piece guy/gal?
Do you have multiple sets?
Are you a "Closet Collector" of luggage?

We have several pieces, but no sets. The variety ensures that we have the appropriate bag for the trip. In theory at least.

My husband and I have one set, purchased long ago, but we never use the larger pieces anymore. They have out of season clothing stored in them. We aren't frequent flyers, but we have a variety of 19"-24" rolling suitcases to choose from at this point, plus an embarrassing number of tote bags.

Oh my gosh you are kidding right? Can't some things just be a secret? There are a couple of FTer handles that I am completely envious of because I wished I would have thought of them. One is Baghoarder and the other is Toomanybags or something like that.
When I see someone complain because they have to send a bag in for warranty work and they won't have a bag while it is gone I read the post in amazement because I have double, triple, quadruple back ups if a bag goes down.
I recently had my master bathroom and closet gutted and a 100% remodel. When the linen closet and custom closets were designed we designed a custom linen closet with doors to be wide enough to accommodate my carry on bags. In my master suite closet I have a large amount dedicated to shelving that holds my many bags and totes. Both the cabinet maker and the closet organizing company said we have never designed cabinets/closet around someone's luggage collection. Shoes yes, but never suitcases. Don't worry though because I got a lot of shoe and clothing storage as well. I can fit two carry on bags lengthwise in the top two shelves of my linen closet. Then in my regular closet I can fit many bags and totes of a variety of sizes and they have their own shelves and homes in my closet.
I am always looking for the perfect carry on bag, laptop case, tote, weekender, checked bag. I make a beeline for the luggage store anytime I am in a place where there is one. My friends have threatened to stage an intervention, however I have slowed down on buying new bags because of the remodel. The reason being is that my bag storage system is just so awesome and neat and tidy that I promised myself bag in, bag out. Since I made that vow a few of these friends have received the bag out.
I am not even going to go back there and count but let's just say I can pack for any situation or scenario and probably pack a half of dozen other people with the left over bags.
I love this stuff!

I am a bag collector, but since I've gotten serious about using Red Oxx products, I've been able to give away some of the older, out-of-date items such as Zero Halliburton aluminum bags from the 1970's and 1980' and some Delsey pieces.
I still could outfit a family of 8 or so for a cruise.

I cringe at calling myself a collector of anything. I have too many bags only because I've been accumulating, trying to find the perfect travel bag, but that never has happened because there is no such thing.
I have a note to myself posted "do not buy another bag, ever".
But then there was a sale and of course I caved.
There is always a SALE!!!!

I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum. Sort of on an anti-luggage kick right now. I try hard to have any checked bags at all. Such a big time waster. I can go a week plus business trip without a single checked back. ^ Something I'm proud of.

I can't believe it has taken me all of today to notice this thread!
MissJoey, I took my luggage and handbags into account when we were renovating our home too!
All my friends think I am a luggage nerd. And also a packing geek (they don't understand why I have master lists and travel essentials that are always ready to go). But they are usually pretty happy when I invariably have just the right bag to lend them for a particular trip....
I try to limit the total number of bags in my luggage family by getting rid of anything that has been in the closet without being used for three or four years. At present we have about five or six pieces of check-in luggage of various sizes in rotation and at least a dozen wheeled and non-wheeled carry on pieces, some highly practical and others utterly frivolous! There is a host of briefcases and other business bags floating around as well. The "use or move it on" principle is not applied to handbags. The total number of handbags in my closet is of course classified, as is the number of pairs of shoes.
I have some go to favorites. Right now it's a Rimowa Salsa Air IATA carry on and a Tom Bihn Western Flyer.

Guilty as charged. ;)
About 30 bags and suitcases in my possession ranging from small daypacks to huge monster suitcases.
But, here is the good part. I consider my collection to be fairly complete. I have bags of most major brands. I have tried out a lot and know what I like now. But most importantly, I have learned what kind of bag I need for what kind of purpose. And it's really rare that I wish I had taken a different bag.
That means I can stop buying bags now and I am pretty happy with what I got, which is rare for a collector.
There are very few pieces that are still tempting me. I'd like to have a leather holdall. Terribly unpractical but stylish indeed. When money will play no role whatsoever, I might do that. Until then I am perfectly happy with my grey Andiamo Valoroso stuff. Looks great, is exclusive, no one else has it, even less so in Europe, is sturdy and practical. Royal Flush! :)
The other piece I'd really like is one of the Dupont Diamond Leather briefcases. Very stylish in the photos but before I spend that kind of coin I want to check out the bag in real live. I will hopefully soon have the opportunity to do so. And then we'll see if I can resist. ;)

Well, I'm glad I'm not alone. :p
I was thinking last night if I HAD to clean out the closets, what I'd keep no matter what.
I'd keep my LL Bean set (it's monogrammed and fairly new - well 12 years old and hardly used), and I need to keep the J.W. Hulme set because it cost me a small fortune, is monogrammed and is my prize set. A fine leather hand made set is always nice. I'd probably keep the Samsonite Odyssey in ballistic black simply because it will wear like iron and a dude always needs a black luggage set. And the Orvis Battenkill would stay. It's fairly pricey, and monogrammed. You just can't part that easily with a monogrammed set.
The rest I could TRY and part with.
I just gave my Ogio set to my girlfriend, after she said I could open a luggage store and asked me for a set.

Hi. I'm Slidergirl. I'm a luggage slut.
I have collected bags and bags mostly because I think of what I need for a particular trip. Airline/rental car vs train/walk, staying where there are elevators vs having to walk up 3 flights of stairs, stuff like that. I have 3 28-30" rolling duffels, a 25" roller and a similar non-roller with backpack straps. I also have my EC roller carryon. I also have a plethora of daypacks, carry bags. Different types of daypacks for different kinds of trips depending on what I have to pack.
I used to have more bags, but I packed some with my ex's clothes when I kicked him out :D

Mr. Penny went through several collecting phases minus dirt bikes. Now he is obsessed with cameras, camera stuff and camera bags. I am of the One Bag philosophy and he would take the whole house if I would agree.
I think we can move everything we would need to pack for a complete house move in baggage. Oh dear!

I own over 40 pieces of luggage - varying from Tumi collections to the Zuca Pro Sport, lots of Tom Bihn, Briggs and Riley and even an assortment of Case Logic. All stored in my attic. I can take a different piece of luggage on most of my trips and never have to see the same bag twice.
I also pick different bags for different trips. I have bags I prefer when I'm traveling with a lot of gear (usually a Pelican) and bags I prefer when I have formal events (some of the newer Tumi stuff).

Love the photos.
I am too lazy to drag all the bags out of the closets (so neatly packed) to photograph them.
I just happened to look in the guest closet and found a set of Hartmann I had forgotten about. Good thing my girlfriend did not see that or I'd have lot it instead of the Ogio set she took.
Like some other FT's that posted I tend to rotate the sets a bit, but not so much that I use all I have. Some pieces still have the original purchase tags on them... like the Hartmann.
It's good to have company in this category. :)

If you are a frequent flyer, it is vitally important to have relatives or friends who travel very, very rarely. These people never seem to have a piece of luggage when it comes time for them to finally take a trip, and you can oh-so-gratiously offer to lend them one of yours, and just never take it back.
My problem is that I have my old favorite bag. It's not perfect, so I keep trying new bags in hopes of finding something better. so I purchase a new bag, use it a few times before deciding I liked my old one better, so the new bag goes into the back of the closet, waiting to be given away to whoever I can pawn it off on. But when I look at all those wasted bags all I think about is how many flights could that have bought me?

I'm glad to have given some of you a chuckle for the day!
I have been known to get some friends hooked on bags by giving them one of mine that I've grown tired of. Kind of like the old line from the dope dealer, "come on, take a taste, the first one is free." ;)
I have loaned out some of my big wheelies to athlete friends who are taking their first trips to Europe and are going on a true shoestring budget. So, while I might not be using every bag I have, someone else can be using part of my stash.
My purchases in the past 6 months have been:
Osprey Sojourn 25" convertible wheelie
Osprey Porter 46 (to go with my Porter 65)
Mountain Hardware Agama daypack (fantastic to use for safari! - light and holds DSLR, binocs, lots of other stuff)
Mountainsmith Endeavor Camera bag

Fellow FTers, how much luggage do you own?
Five pieces. In order by size:
1) Lipault small bag for those 7kg flights. On other flights, I'll pack it as a spare bag in case I need to check more stuff on my return.
2) Samsonite X-Space spinner, my "small" carryon where there's no (or a higher) weight limit.
3) Tumi Vapor 20" Int'l carryon.
4) Tumi Vapor medium case.
5) Ricardo Beverly Hills 28" case. This one's my oldest, but I rarely use it. Generally only use it where there's three of us traveling and we need a second checked bag between us.
Edit: when I bought 2, 3, and 4 last year, we gave away 14 pieces of luggage.....

I guess I don't have a collection as much as a series of bags that I still have because I have found a better one and have not got rid of the older ones.
I am somewhat obsessive about rolling computer bags - my current favourite is the B&R306X4.
I don't get too excited about other types of bags so long as they just 'work' but I guess I am hung up on packing cubes and the like - to put inside the 306X naturally - and to make carrying all the various computer and electrical bits I need easier to carry.

Replaced an old (7-8 years?) Travelpro rollaboard with the new version after it was too tattered for me to stand it any more.

I don't collect luggage as a hobby as some seem to but we do have about 8-10 bags. It is nice to have the right bag for the journey at hand. Our "collection" consists of Samsonite, tumi, delsey etc. We seldom check luggage so most our odd assortment is based around smaller bags.
On a related topic I do have a major camera bag addiction:p when I go into battle I don't leave anything to chance. Depending on the job I may have any of several bags with me. I have one enormous bag for light stands and monolights that could hold a small adult if the compartment were removed. I have mostly Tarmac with a few others pieces. I need help:eek:

You know, I think you may have hit on it, for me at least! I buy luggage ostensibly in search of the perfect bag but really because it embodies the journey. And the journey is as much about the anticipation (the potential for adventure) as anything.

I'm totally with you.
I continue to expand my collection. I just bought a few pieces of Tommy Hilfiger that I just could not resist for their design and eclectic value thinking "I'd like to use these on my next trip to South America. That thought, combined with the adventure potential made the purchase irresistible. The bag will be perfect for that "Adventure" to me.
Since my current girlfriend talked me out of my Ogio luggage set, I think I needed to replace that anyway. Thus is my justification. ;)
I should add, my girlfriend loves to travel, but does not "collect" luggage, but she does get a brand new set every year in anticipation for her next adventure!
