Dear all,
I was wondering if KLM ever overbooks economy on their Cityhopper planes? I have never been on an overbooked cityhopper plane, though I have been on countless times on planes that are ''exactly'' full, making me wonder, maybe KLM never overbooks Cityhoppers? If so, why?
Lastly, what is the difference (in terms of service, food... etc.) in the business class of a cityhopper compaired to a regular 737-X00 KLM flight?
Sincerely,
SB

I doubt they have a policy against overbooking Cittyhopper planes, but with a smaller plane it is easier to manage the overbookings (because there are fewer seats). With a very large plane (e.g. a 77W or 744) the margin of error in terms of number of seats is higher because there are more seats to manage.
Lastly, what is the difference (in terms of service, food... etc.) in the business class of a cityhopper compaired to a regular 737-X00 KLM flight?
I hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the type of plane dictates the level of service, rather the length of the flight. One difference is that on a 737 EBC means a blocked middle seat, where as on a ERJ there is no middle seat to block.

I frequently got seated in the front of Cityhoppers when I lived in Europe. On my short Cityhopper flights the only difference I can recall was that I got seated in row 2 or so and got a bit more attention (for another drink, for example).

I got upgraded PRG-AMS once on a Fokker F70. Seat up front, and instead of sandwiches a tray with something a bit more decent. So it does happen, but it is rare.

I was "upgraded" from LHR to AMS recently on a F70.

In my opinion the only difference was the newspaper we were offered as the on board service was the same. Interesting to note that all passengers were served sandwiches while it was an afternoon flight and according to other experiences there normally is a "sweet or savory" service on the Boeing operated flights.

Do flights operated by KLC always get a more substantial service?

I've had about 10 CityHopper op-ups. Mostly pre-EB though so getting moved from exit row 11D to 2E...

KLC flights might have more leisure travellers connecting to long haul in AMS: passengers who are less likely to cancel their bookings at the last minute than KLM mainline business routes.

Nope. Always the sweet or salty after brekkie time on my AMS-GVA route. Even with a 17:00h departure.

I fly mainly Cityhopper because my travel is usually EU medium haul. I have received a handful of upgrades in the past two years of being Platinum.

In general overbooking on the smaller planes is less aggressive as there are less seats to fill and the overbooking percentage is thus smaller. Furthermore, the flights I am on are not always full.
Nevertheless, OPUPs do happen and they seem more common lately with higher load factors on KL.

The differences between the European Business Class and the Economy class are not that great however. Seat pitch is slightly better than at the back of the plane but an exit row seat still has way more leg space.
Cabin crew will be able to store your suit/jacket in the wardrobe.
There's a newspaper.
Food is better.
As the kitchen is very limited on the Cityhopper planes, there's no warm food. This means you're getting the Marcel Wanders surprise box which in the past had a tasty sandwich from time to time but lately seems to only offer salad and a bread roll.
Food is still better than the "sweet or savoury" choice in the back...
Drink service is the same, sometimes you might get a better wine in the front and if you have a nice Stewardess or Stewart they'll leave you the 33cl can instead of just the 0,2cl can.

I used to fly on KLM Cityhopper quite regulary and was upgraded at least 15 times due to overbooking. Just in the recent 2 years op-ups became less regular than the previous years before were I sometimes had 2 upgrades in a week.
But the (Automatic) upgrades were mainly given to Plat or occasionally Gold elites only.

On the way back from AMS last year g/f was upgraded, while I was left in economy - and I was the one with the 'status' (FB Gold)
