I'm renting from JFK for 10 days the speciality BMW X3.
I was wondering if anyone has rented this car from this location or from any other location and could tell me what to expect.
From the photo it looks like the new model, but was wondering if it will be a 28i or 35i and if anyone knows what spec it could be.
thanks:D

Does it come with in-dash navigation and head up display though? cause I just made a reservation with this car and this is my first time to rent with Avis. By the way, do you happen to know what year it is for this model?

Yes navigation but not heads up display on windshield.
It had 2k miles on it
I assumed it was a 2012

Oh, well that's what I expected anyway. Let's see if I'm lucky to meet X5 prior the day I pick up the car, I heard that you cannot reserve the X5 for particular reason which I do not know unlike 528i that you can reserve it online.

I upgraded at SAN airport
15 dollars extra per day from a generic compact to a 5series
Total 27 per day plus taxes and fees was a great deal

That's a damn nice rate even for a compact!! Are you a PC or CC by chance?

Got the X3 from JFK with 22 miles on it 3 weeks ago, the one I had was a 28i, no in dash nav. To be completely honest was not so impressed by the overall picture. Would not pay all that extra cash to drive it.

Not sure what you mean pc or cc
But I put in a blind bid of 12 dollars a Day thru Priceline and was given Avis at SAN
They offered to upgrade to a x5 for 30 a Day extra we negotiated down to 15 extra a day for the 528i
Great deal great car averaged over 26 mpg on highway

YMMV. I'm Presidents Club and sometimes can get a specialty car (have received the Wrangler, Infiniti G25x, Infiniti FX37) and sometimes just get a Luxury.
It all depends on the inventory they have on hand, and the agent.

Not specific to your situation, but I've had the 328i (IAH) and 528i (ATL) and turned down the X3 and X5 (multiple locations). I was VERY underimpressed with the 3 and 5 Series, which is why I turned down the SUVs. The cars felt underpowered (528 was seriously underpowered) and the amenities were horrible (no XM, nav, sunroofs, heated seats on the 3.. can't remember if the 5 had heated seats). From other Avis cars, these are FAR from the "ultimate driving machine." I'll gladly take any Lincoln (but the dreaded Town Car), the Infiniti FX, Infiniti M, VW CC, Hyundai Genesis, new Explorer or Infiniti G37x instead of the BMW offerings. Off topic: I read in last week's USAToday that a base 3 Series starts at 36k.. I would have never guessed it was that high from driving one; there are many cars with better options/driving experiences that I'd prefer for that kind of $$.

More OT:
I own a 2012 Infiniti G37x and priced it against the 2011 BMW 3-series (335Ix) and for considerably less money ($6-$8,000) I got a far better car... The interior of the 3-series just looks...dated. Now, I understand the 2012 3-series is all-new (it wasnt available at the time I bought my '12 G37x), so maybe the differences have lessened.

Do you know if it had the new 2.0 litre 4 cylinder turbo engine and 8 speed auto?

How long ago was the 528 rented? By the sounds of it, you had the older 528 with the old six cylinder (3.0L, I think) engine, rather then the new 2.0L turbo 4 cylinder engine with 8 speed auto. New 2.0L T engine should not be under powered - 0-60 in 6 seconds!

Only someone who has no idea about cars or what great handling means would prefer the options you mentioned earlier over a 5 or 3 series, or state that there are many better options out there than the 3 series.

I had it about 2 months ago in ATL. I don't remember the mileage so I don't know how "new" it was.

To each his own. I'm not driving on the autobahn when I rent from metropolis US locations and the Infiniti/Lincoln (non TC)/other "sporty" cars that I've had from Avis handle perfectly fine for me... and it's not like I'm taking curves at Gramps speeds, so I do appreciate good handling. And if my choices are "great handling" (above and beyond what an Infiniti can offer) or loads of useful amenities, I'll take the amenities.

I arrived last week expecting to see a new bmw x3, but was pleasantly surprised to see a new bmw x5. It had less than 4k miles, with leather interior, satnav (3d mode shows all the buildings in scale quite impressive), it had a 3.5lt engine.
The BMW had quite a lot of power and was an amazing ride, only problem was that the car had squeaky brakes (a very typical issue with this car) and it also guzzled gas.
When i returned the car after 10days i was told that I will not be able to rent this car and/or x3 from jfk, but only from Manhattan.
I will definitely try to rent it again.

It's funny. As a current BMW owner who's enjoyed European Delivery on a M3 and 750Li in Munich, so getting a chance to drive the BMWs in its natural Autobahn environment, I still prefer a Chrysler 300 limited when renting in Detroit because I'd take a well equipped, well riding car in the cratered Detroit metro area over a stripper 328i.
Once a BMW is optioned up with $10-20k of Nappa leather/Sport/cold/premium/sound/tech pack options is when it really turns into a luxury sports sedan. Otherwise it's just a well handling and stiff riding car whose talents are wasted in the chopped up, grid pattern, mean Detroit streets.

What trim level are Avis' X3s?
The one I rented from National, was just a base 2012 xDrive 28i.

Totally agree. As an M3 owner, I have no desire to drive any BMW that Avis has to offer. I would much rather have an M37 (for sedan) or FX37 (for the SUV).

I will be in SFO next week. Would the BMW X3 worth the $37/day upcharge compared to fullsize?
Thanks,

I'd rent a BMW 528 at JFK last week, it was about 6500miles when I got it, it doesn't come with head up display. no satnav, no heat or cold seat, no back camera. worse than the 525d which I rent in Hamburg last October.
