Iberia Airlines Iberia Plus - Flight Diversion/Cancellation EU271

-Original itinerary ZRH-MAD-JFK on Iberia
-ZRH-MAD flight diverted (Mechanical) to LYS, flight cancelled
-Rerouted LYS-CDG-JFK on Air France.
-Original scheduled arrival was 20:25, landed JFK at 22:45

Does this situation likely fall within the EU271 passenger rights rules for compensation? How does one file a claim with Iberia?

I'm not sure of the rules, but in any case, I think it is impressive that you were handled so quickly during the diversion.

I would have expected to have been 24 hours late!

I don't believe it does. Flight diversion for mechanical reasons is an 'extraordinary circumstance'

One question though: since it departed from ZRH, does EU271 even apply?

I understand it applies because IB is a carrier from the EU, but I always thought it was EU261.
