Choice Privileges - London hotel recommendations?

When I got into the Choice program a few years ago, award costs were pretty stable and predictable. They even published a catalog listing every hotel and the award rates for the different seasons. At the time, I didn't know how many points I could rack up, so I concentrated on the lower cost properties in London and just left it at that.

Lately, of course, the award rates have been on a roller coaster. Many FT'ers (myself included) have scored some pretty amazing deals by grabbing targets of opportunity as they presented themselves.

Last year, I knew we were going to be in Paris, so I did my due diligence - I made up a list of all the props that I deemed acceptable and, when the time came to book and the rates were so low, I grabbed what was (to me) the best deal and had a great time. But I never got around to doing that in London.

Now, Choice is back with more bargain-basement deals - I believe every hotel in London can be gotten for 8000 points/night.

So, if things continue this way (i.e., the deals are available when I want to go), I'll have to do the same process with Choice in London, TripAdvisor, etc. To try to shortcut that a bit, I'm wondering what the feelings/recommendations are among the Choice cognoscenti here on FT?

AFAIK, only the Hyde Park property, the Paddington, and one near St. Pancras have been mentioned - there are about 30 others in London proper that I never hear about.

Any ideas?

I think those properties were mentioned more than others in part because they're exceptionally well located to certain kind of travel (including first and/or last day, in connections to LHR, and/or side trips to certain out-of-London destinations).

Not all 30 are like that. I seem to recall, through a tedious one-by-one process, that a number of them were not well located to the Tube (even if you didn't care which line you were on).

I've only had the experience with the Hyde Park property, but it's a solid hotel, located less than a mile from Paddington and right around the corner from the Queensway Tube station. The neighborhood is quite safe but is certainly at a remove from some of the central sights in London--which has its negatives but its positives as well since you generally shouldn't have to worry about noise at night. The Tube will get you where you want to be pretty quickly if you have no desire to walk (I'm a walker, but if you're in London, you've got to try the Tube at least once, right?).

The area around the hotel has a neighborhoody feel about it--in other words, comfortable, but I wouldn't expect the best restaurants or shopping to be right around the corner although I found some very comfortable places with good food at reasonable prices within several blocks. And, if you're on the other side of Hyde Park in at least two directions, you'll find great shopping.

Without an experience at any other Choice property, I can't say that the Hyde Park is the best in London. I can only say that it was a very good experience and that the location, although not smack dab in the middle of everything, was central enough that I didn't feel as if I was stuck out in the suburbs. I would have no problem returning. I might not even have any problems paying 150 pounds per night if I couldn't get a points redemption, but I'd certainly check around London--I did get the impression that this was a relatively affordable option compared with surrounding properties, however.
