Found the following here (http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/klm.htm).

"After boarding, the crew announced that since business class and Economy comfort zones were not full, they would be willing to upgrade passengers in economy for a fee. It was like a bazaar in there, they announced the price, then after a while starting lowering it. The whole thing lasted 30 minutes. "

Sounds like a commercial vesion of musical chairs.

It would be quite interesting to know who kept the money for these in-cabin upgrades. :)

I would be surprised if this was true - it would create complaints from those that paid the full free for EC upfront. Or a purser that made his/her own rules. On my last flight Y class was not full, there were especially many empty EC seats. The purser announced that 1) people could move around in their class but indicated the difference between normal Y and EC and 2) people could move to EC for a fee. When people came to ask the price, it was the same as offered online.

The announcement was made on my flight to DXB a couple of weeks ago as EC was more or less empty. However the purser came to my wife and myself and said we can move to any seat in the EC cabin prior to making the sale announcement. We were happy where we were but around 3 passengers paid the extra - which was the same as we paid online.

It is sometimes possible to purchase inflight upgrades, but it is a discrete procedure, far from a bargain, and you will have to ask the crew yourself. I have never experienced this upgrade bazaar described here.

Then you can pay with cc and you get offical receipts and all that.

Just read this months Holland Herald and on page 85 it says: economy comfort seats can now be purchased on board, depending on availability.
