Hi All
I was on a Qantas economy revenue flight from Syd to Mel and paid 30 dollars extra for 1 small extra bag I should have carried on
After long delays at the gate they said the plane was not fit to fly and they put us on a later flight a few hours later
At that point they only had middle seats left so I upgraded with my Qantas points to business
They said because I upgraded last minute they said no food for you
And marked it on the boarding pass
On such a short flight I couldn't care less. However when i asked if the 30 dollars should be refunded
They said when upgrading to business class you waive second bag privileges
So no refund is due
Is this correct?
Thanks

I think you were fed 'a line'. You don't waive those privileges per se.
In reality the opportunity cost of getting that $30 may not make it worthwhile; but if you wish to pursue a refund it may be tough.
Here's the page on purchasing additional baggage online:
Additional Baggage Allowance - Terms and Conditions (http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/additional-baggage-terms/global/en)

Looking at the baggage allowance for a domestic flight from http://www.qantas.com.au/travel/airlines/checked-baggage/global/en , it states that the allowance is 1 bag regardless of economy or business, just that the 1 bag can be heavier
Economy 1 piece (maximum 23kg)
Business 1 piece (maximum 32kg)
Given that there were 2 bags checked in, the excess fee would apply regardless of economy or business
I do not see that any refund is due in this instance

Thanks for the heads up all ^
No worries 30 Australian is about the price for a salad starter now these days Down Under
I'm a bit shocked at the cost of living here now
A small chicen breast averages 35 to 50 dollars on average and it may come with a small side if you are lucky......
Giving credit where credit is due and more off topic I was blown away by the amazing Qantas 380 in First Class from LHR to SYD
even more impressive the food service out of Singapore the final leg
Qantas does premium cabins like no other IMHO
In fact the quality of food in the air rivals that of Jamie Olivers new trendy dining spot in Sydney by far and many others regardless of cost
Well done Qantas ^

Food on the SYD-SIN leg is much better than the SIN-SYD leg.

Man Qantas is terrible. She may be right with the rules she stipulated but there is no way someone should just blindly follow rules if exceptions could be made for extremely loyal customers.

Why on earth shouldn't they be consistent in application of rules
Those that have status get additional allowance, others do not

Well OT, but I wonder where you have been eating recently? I can understand that the cost of living here has gone up, especially if converting from USD at the moment, but I eat out a lot here (and O/S) and would be shocked to pay more than $35 to maybe $40 for a chicken breast.
Must be some very trendy places if they are charging $50 for a tiny bit of chook. Do yourself a favour and get yourself a copy of the Cheap Eats guide. You don't need to go too downmarket, but many good meals can be had for a lower price than that.
