hi everyone

my wife and i are planning on going to argentina next month and we're scheduled to spend some time in iguazu. we're staying at the sheraton in the park but we have a 7am flight on a saturday. does anyone have any tips for us to ensure that we don't miss our flight back to BA? should i rent a car? is it going to be easy for us to procure a taxi at 5:30 in the morning? any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Change to a later flight or I am sure that the concierge at the Sheraton will be able to arrange the transport for you. Why do you need such an early flight?

Which flight is that at 7AM from IGR to AEP?

Hello... welcome to FT. Staying at the Sheraton, you should not have issues. I suggest you arrange with the front desk to have a Taxi waiting for you at 530AM just to be extra sure, but in any event you will be fine.

Wonderful. Thank you for the info and thanks for the welcome! I've been a lurker for quite some time and I've always loved the info.

We have a very limited amount of time in Argentina and we wanted to do a very fast tour of Iguazu. We wanted to get back into BA ASAP to be able to catch the Sunday Market in San Telmo. I don't like taking early flights either but we have a lot to see in Argentina!

Good move... if you are done with Iguazu its a great idea to take the 1st flight out to have more time in BA... sounds like a very good plan and getting a little less sleep is a good investment !! ^

You also asked about renting a car in Iguazu. We have been there 3 times and always stayed in the city, not at the Sheraton. The Sheraton is awesome for getting in and out of the park, but the good restaurants are all 15 km away in Puerto de Iguazu. Avis will charge you 125-150 USD per day and getting gasoline is a major pain due to long lines, periodic rationing, and complete unavailability of the product. If you're going to be in Iguazu for 3 or more days I'd recommend renting so that you could drive to the mines at Wanda or drive into Brazil, but anything less and you'll not really have the time for those side trips so I'd just get taxis. There will normally be a few queued up at your hotel and at the park, and they you rarely have to spend more than 5 minutes trying to flag one town in the city.

I meant to book a later flight to avoid having to get up so early.

You should allow sufficient time to see the falls from both the Argentine side as well as the Brazilian side.

I spent the whole day on the Argentine side and one full morning on the Brazilian side. Still have enough time for a quick lunch before catching a 3PM flight back to AEP in time for a tango dinner and show.

I stayed 2 nights at the Iguazu Grand and recommend the El Jardin restaurant there. I also dined at Aqva. Very good food and service at both places. If you like fish, you must try the local river fish called Surubi.

Yellow Fever vaccination is recommended by many health authorities for the Iguazu Falls area. At a minimum, bring insect repellent with DEET to apply on the exposed skin.

I saw long queue at the petrol station when I was there in February, 2012.

If you have to rent a car, make arrangements for the rental agency to provide the car with a full tank of gas. Chances are, 99% of the time you will not use more than a full tank for a short rental... that way, unless the refill charge is abusive, you can avoid the issue of long lines.

Iguazu Grand had their own hire cars with drivers to take their guests around town and was not expensive. Just sign the chit and the fare was billed to the room.

From Iguazu Grand to Aqva, a short distance, it only cost ARS 20 each way. After dinner, we just asked the waitress to call the hotel to send a car to pick us up.

If you tell the hotel, you need a taxi at 5:30 AM to the airport, they will have a trusted driver waiting for you at 5:30 AM.

Indeed, but call down to the front desk at 5:00 anyway to do another confirmation that they have been called and are on the way.
OTOH if it were me I would prefer more sleep and a morning walk through the park instead of the San Telmo market but to each his own.

BTW - ENJOY - The Sheraton Iguazu is awesome. Always remember getting into the lobby and being able to see "The Devil's Throat" in the background. It really is a wonderful place.

The OP was in early March, and referred to a trip "next month", so maybe it is already over. But the Sheraton will even do a pickup/drop off at the Brazilian airport if you like, so it should be no problem.

You get at least one extra passports stamp that way too!!
