National - Payment Change on Reservation Won't Stick

For the past two rentals, I have changed my online reservation from AMEX to VISA so that I could take advantage of some unused travel awards that are sitting in my Cap One Venture account. To my surprise, after I've completed the rental and checked my monthly statement, the payment has reverted back to AMEX. At first I thought I might have forgotten to make the switch but I honestly don't think I've made this same mistake twice in a row.

Yes, I know I should check the details of my receipt before I leave. But when I'm returning a car at the airport, I'm only looking to make sure the billed amount is the same as what was quoted in the reservation so that I can get out of there and catch my flight. I suppose now I'll have to remember to double-check with the gate attendant at check-out to make sure they're billing to the VISA. Lately the gate attendant hasn't been giving me any paperwork at departure so there's nothing I can check at that point.

So has anyone else experienced this when changing form of payment in an online reservation?
