Apparently, KLM has a bank transfer payment options for customers beginning their trips from the UK. If I make such a transfer from a UK bank account, is there a transfer fee charged normally by the bank? I know there will not be a fee charged for UK-UK bank account transfers, but I'm not sure what KLM is using here.

You should contact your bank for any transfer fees.

In order for you to make the transfer they have to give you their account information (the account in which you need to transfer the money). From that it should be evident if their account is in the UK or in the Netherlands. You should be able to find that on the KL website.

ETA: From KLM.com:

With bank transfers, you usually pay through our partner Global Collect. However, you will need to transfer money directly to us, when booking in the Netherlands Antilles, Aruba, Ecuador, Ghana, Iran, Nigeria, Oman, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Suriname, Thailand or South Korea. Your payment is safe in all instances

From that it sounds that if you are not in the countries mentioned above, it is a local (not int'l) transfer. Furthermore, according to the Global Collect (http://www.globalcollect.com/payment-methods/bank-transfers/) web site it seems that it would be local if you are in the UK.

Hi Thanks for your response, florin. It's all booked and settled. I was given a Barclay London account to transfer to. No charge! Much better than using my non-UK credit card (4.50GBP surcharge + forex conversion)

!You should contact your bank for any transfer fees.

I believe that banks are not allowed to charge extra fees for transfers within the EU provided all information is given (IBAN/SWIFT-code etc).

For "EU" read "Eurozone". This doesn't apply for transfers outside the Eurozone. My UK bank charges me GBP 10 each time I transfer money to my Euroland account.

FoMy UK bank charges me GBP 10 each time I transfer money to my Euroland account. My Dutch bank charges nothing for SEPA Credit Transfers (SCT), or transfers within the EU up to a maximum of € 50,000.--

My Danish bank, on the other hand, charges 100 Danish kronor, whereas at my Swedish one EU transfers are free if done online.

But Global Collect provides (for a list of countries) an account to transfer money into that is local. So for countries outside the Eurozone (UK, Denmark, etc) the transfer would be local, therefore free (or at least very cheap).

My Dutch bank lets me transfer up to 50.000 Euro for free to the EEA, Switzerland and Monaco (SEPA), if IBAN and BIC/SWIFT provided.

The official rules are that SEPA amounts up to 50.000 Euro has to be handled as if it was a local transfer. Amount has to be in Euro.

So in countries as Denmark, United Kingdom the Euro isn't the local currency, so you have to compare with a local Euro booking (if available).

And -for example- my personal Dutch bank account lets me transfer up to 50.000 Euro for free, while my business Dutch bank account isn't free. Just because local transfers aren't free either for the business account.
