Sounds like an upgrade to me!

The oneworld site still shows IB as flying on some days between BCN and JNB after May 20121. Is this merely reflective of a data gap or slowness between Iberia and oneworld? Is IB pulling out entirely from Johannesburg?

Yes they pulling out entirely. There never was a BCN - JNB flight, it always went through MAD (with plane change) - I think that is just a glitch. Although in the IB statements they keep making reference to the fact that IB will continue to serve JNB through code share flights with BA.

ˇGracias! for clarifying that for me (us), wijibintheair. It was one of those change-of-gauge with the same flight number sleights of hand, I suspect, and not displayed properly.

It is a real pity about this service being cut. As we are all aware, any OW RTW fare out of South Africa has to go via Europe in one direction or the other, and IB was the only way of avoiding BA's ridiculous surcharges. Also recently their J class service at least was a very decent product on the JNB route.

Suspension of Madrid-Johannesburg service from 1st May 2012
Iberia will be suspending its flights between Madrid and Johannesburg from 1st May 2012 although we will
continue to offer a service to this destination through our codeshare agreements with British Airways (BA).
Measures are being taken to mitigate the inconvenience this decision may have on our passengers and as a
result, customers holding tickets issued to travel from 1st May 12 onwards will be rebooked via LON with BA on
an involuntary reroute basis in the following manner:
• Customers with routings between the United Kingdom, Spain and South Africa will be rebooked by IB
via LON on IB marketed flights operated by BA and tickets can be reissued as “involuntary rerouting” by
the IB offices or by the Travel Agent
• Customers travelling between South Africa & North, Central or South America will also be rebooked by
IB via LON on IB marketed flights operated by BA and once again tickets can be reissued as “involuntary
rerouting” by the IB offices or by the Travel Agent
In both cases, if the passenger declines the option offered by us, they may rebook to the same
destination within a 3-day period before or a 14-day period after the scheduled departure time of the
flight.
If the same booking class is not available then the lowest class in the same cabin may be booked. If the
new departure date is more than 3-days before or more than 15-days after the scheduled departure
time of the original flight/s, the rebooking must be in the same booking class. Travel must take place
within the ticket validity of the original ticket purchased.
• For customers travelling between Europe & South Africa the owner of the PNR will need to rebook on
flights operated and marketed by BA for the segment to/from LON and for the segment LON to/from
Europe within a 3-day period before or a 14-day period after the scheduled departure time of the
original flight. If the same booking class if not available, then the lowest class in the same cabin may be
booked.
If the new departure date is more than 3-days before or more than 15-days after the scheduled
departure time of the original flights, the rebooking must be in the booking same class and cabin (with
the exception of reservations in P class, that have to be rebooked in O class). Travel must take place
within the ticket validity of the original ticket purchased.
These involuntary reroutings need IB authorization before being reissued by the Travel Agent. Please
call 011 441 8600 for this authorisation.
Unticketed bookings with departure dates from 01 May 12 will be cancelled automatically.
PLEASE NOTE that a transit visa may be required for non-European passport holders. Any visa costs are the
responsibility of the customer.
In cases where the customer does not accept the rerouting, a full or part refund is authorised and no refund
fee or penalty charge will be applied.

Being an Avios flight, I might be in trouble. There are ZERO rewards flights out of JNB in May. Im also worried Im going to get stuck paying hundreds of dollars in BA fees

So I called BA and they rebooked me via London and I was able to make a small change from Madrid to Barcelona.

No extra taxes, just leaving 2 hours earlier and arriving 2 hours later. 45 minute connection at LHR :( He said it would be fine as we stay inside security, both flights are in Terminal 5, and bags are checked through. We shall see
