Avis - Experience in HKG (Hong Kong Island Side)?View Full Version : Experience in HKG (Hong Kong Island Side)? James97 Mar 8, 12, 3:46 pm Has anyone had experience with Avis in Hong Kong at the Hopewell centre? e.g. good representatives, car types, gps etc. Tips much appreciated! senna60_94 Mar 8, 12, 8:53 pm I have not rented from them but I'm a HK local. The franchise holder is a local grey import/2nd hand car/tuning parts retailing concern which have been in business for a long time, so their cars could either have come from their new or late model 2nd hand stock. As HK is a compact city that has excellent public transport system, not many tourists rent cars at all, & so I would guess the fleet to be rather under utilised. GPS will be the portable type, most likely to be a Chinese brand. Limewood Mar 8, 12, 9:01 pm Why rent a car in HK???, one of best cities in the world for fast efficient public transport services, Mass Transit Rail (MTR) trains leave about every 5 mins!, so clean too, busses everywhere and ferries around the harbour, all as cheap as chips all accessed with an Octopus card (buy at airport on arrival), they even give you back what you haven't used on departure. We have bunch of ex pat Aussie friends who have been working and living in HK for years none of them have (or want) a car. James97 Mar 9, 12, 5:05 am Thanks for the replies!! Indeed you do not need a car and cars are also expensive to buy there because of luxury taxes (I was told) and parking spaces are very expensive and little space. The reason for me renting a car is purely privacy, I want to take the Mrs. on a tour on the island to some remote places (near Stanley beach) and then drive to Lantau for some scenic roads and the Budha afterwards some shopping in Skygate City Mall. By public transport this all can not be done in one day and you will have to walk a lot. By taxi you do not have any privacy and you can not stop every time you feel like it. I have done a taxi tour to the Peak, onwards to Stanley and Aberdeen but I felt very limited. We both like driving, therefore our decision to do this. I really like downtown Hong Kong but the city has much more to offer. My thread was merely to find out more about Avis and their cars, gps and employees. I also found decent rates at Hertz but didn't like their offered car selection. I hope I also inspire other people to enjoy the beautiful landscape that HKG has to offer!!! Many Thx senna60_94 Mar 9, 12, 9:38 am Car selection is likely to be limited due to little demand, but I think Avis offers more cars. Other rental agencies include Toyota Rentalease (operated by local Toyota distributor) & DCH leasing (operated by another major car distributor group). Insiderdude Mar 10, 12, 2:29 pm Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry9650/5.0.0.1006 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105) I rented from there last year and got a very small, but newer Toyota. Only had 1,300kms on it, IIRC. I rented exactly for the OP's reasons, as I didn't have much time in HKG and needed to see some of the hard-to-reach places all in 1 day. The counter lady was pretty nice and helpful (close to what you'd find at the local station here stateside), and as expected, didn't know what an Avis CHM was. No biggie, we had a 2 day rental with a compact --- overall good experience. nacho Mar 12, 12, 2:11 am You can't drive inside Lantau, it's restricted area. The only people who could drive inside the island are special permit holders. I doubt that you can get one from a rental car. There is also a big area in Sai Kung being restricted area - it's to set up to preserve the nature and not let cars pouring in. Hong Kong has a lot of beautiful landscape and a car can take you to some but you need a boat to see the beautiful islands. senna60_94 Mar 12, 12, 2:55 am You can't drive inside Lantau, it's restricted area. You can drive but only to either Tung Chung or Penny Bay (Disneyland). nacho Mar 12, 12, 8:09 am You can drive but only to either Tung Chung or Penny Bay (Disneyland). I sometimes forget that they are actually in Lantau :D I think OP is talking about the roads in the restricted area. That is correct, but I will change my routing, this website was very helpfull; http://drss.td.gov.hk/drss/index.php?lang=E James97 Apr 6, 12, 6:43 am I have had a great experience with Avis Hong Kong, both offices (Hopewell Centre and Peninsula Centre) are run by Far East Rent A Car ltd. I rented at Hopewell Centre car park, which has its entrance at Kennedy road (which is easily accessible by car through mid-levels). The personnel were quite attentive, but the paperwork was extensive (although I am an Avis Preferred). I was upgraded to a convertible (1 class upgrade), which was nice. My girlfriend could be an additional driver for free. The collection and return check was very thorough but correct. I would recommend anybody to rent here. The driving was great and as it was a sunny day we enjoyed the ride with the top down. We have driven the route as planned but I was glad that I bought an IphoneGPS app from NAV4D for 5.99 USD with a one month license, as the traffic can be quite hectic. |
