Well, I am on travel in West Rhine (Wuppertal) part of Germany and I have a flight back to the US tomorrow from Frankfurt. They said that all the trains/buses/other public transportation is down, and who knows how long they will be out for.

Anyone based out here in Germany want to give me any advice as to how to proceed? Should I just cab it to Frankfurt? It is roughly 110 miles.

Unless you plan on using the S-Bahn to get to FRA, you should be ok. As far as I know, the "Deutsche Bahn" runs (more or less) as scheduled.

Cab will be expensive, and strikes usually happen for a day or two at a time. You should be ok.

Strikes have been announced, Hessen (in which FRA is located) will be affected on Thursday/Friday:

Either leave today and overnight at the airport or play it by tomorrow with an option to take a cab or rent a car in the last minute. A one way car rental will cost you 80-100€ plus gas, a hotel near FRA can be had for 60-80€ on hrs.de

Hello all,

Thank you for your responses and feedback, it is much appreciated!

So from the information I am getting from the hotel, the D. Bahn is still running, I just hope the main station in Wuppertal has ticketing agents working.

If not, the advice to rent a car is sound, hopefully it will not have to come to that.

Thank you again!

You can buy a ticket online, no need for ticketing agents @:-)

Oliver - life saver there. Apparently the Wuppertal train station does not take credit cards. Thank you again!

Does anyone know of future planned strike actions? Will be in Germany and worried now:

Dusseldorf/Bonn: March 31-April 2
Hamburg: April 4-5

No one knows at the moment. Verdi (trade union) is still arguing with the employer (country of Germany) about the increase of salaries. They have a meeting today. If they agree on something you will definitely be fine, if not there might be a larger strike affecting the public life in Germany more seriously.

Stop the panic. The negotiations have been finished sucessfully, there is a new contract, valid for two years - no more strikes in the near future.
