Ideal for families who play together or couples who have something to celebrate, this luxury crewed catamaran can make Caribbean dreams come true. Charter the 46-foot, three-cabin Magic Inspiration, and every part of your trip will be taken care of: luxury accommodations for up to six, gourmet meals made with local ingredients, and water sports including snorkeling and kayaking. And with an experienced captain and first mate as your guides, you’ll see every bright and beautiful thing the Virgin Islands have to offer.

What we love

The Jetsetter rate includes daily meals and plentiful snacks (see a sample menu), standard alcohol, water sports equipment and the services of a two-person crew
Think of this owner-operated yacht as a B&B at sea; owners Sandy and Jeff Ludlam will make you feel right at home in no time
Your Caribbean itinerary is entirely up to you and your captain; see a sample of what you can do
This part of the world is best experienced by boat — you can’t get 360-degree views like these in a hotel
With room for six, this is a great option for a family vacation, celebrating couples or a girls weekend
Looking for Thanksgiving plans? Consider lounging in the Caribbean on this private yacht
Water activities like snorkeling, kayaking, swimming and water tubing
Gourmet meals made with the abundant local produce
Captain Jeff mixes a mean Painkiller, a regional favorite made with rum and coconut
Mango, the boat’s resident cat, provides endless entertainment (you can often find her in the captain’s chair)
Unlike boats with larger, hired crews, the owners operate this luxury catamaran, meaning you’ll get personalized service — and probably leave with two new friends

What to know

All bookings are on Standby — your reservation will be accepted or denied within 24 hours
Additional dates are available; please contact our Member Services team at 877-JSET-USA to inquire
This 46-foot catamaran, built in 2005, sleeps six
If you’re finicky about bathrooms, take note: pump-your-own toilets and closetlike showers
The crew works for tips; there is a required 15 percent gratuity to be paid at the end of the charter, but passengers should reward exemplary service with 20 percent
After booking on Jetsetter, you’ll receive a standard industry contract and a preference sheet. The preference sheet should be taken seriously; this is how the captain and cook will plan meals and the itinerary
You can arrange diving excursions with a trusted company that’ll meet you by the boat
Most diets can be accommodated (vegan, etc.)
No TVs in rooms, but there's a flatscreen in the common area and free movies
Pickup in Charlotte Amalie can be arranged — an easy flight from the states
You might sail to the British Virgin Islands, so have your passport ready

Jetsetter review
Standing on the bow of a 46-foot catamaran, hair fluttering in the sea breeze, shoulders warmed by the sun, eyes fixed on the Caribbean’s stunningly blue horizon, I didn't have a hard time deciding that, yes, actually, it will be a pirate’s life for me.

Daily meals, snacks, drinks and water sports are all included in the rate.Well, not exactly a pirate’s life; swashbuckling’s not my thing. But I certainly feel as if I’ve been stowed away on a dream trip while onboard the Magic Inspiration. The charm of this owner-operated private yacht available for charters in the Virgin Islands lies in the details — in that every one of them is taken care of.

Cozy accommodations in one of three queensize cabins? Check. Water sports like kayaking and snorkeling? Check. Gourmet meals made to order with fresh ingredients? Check. The booze of your choice for nightly cocktails? Checkmate.

It’s all included in the rate when you charter this six-person yacht. But it’s the service you’ll get on board that makes this Caribbean vacation priceless. Owners Jeff and Sandy Ludlam (he’s the captain; she’s the chef) may come from corporate backgrounds; they decided to charter this Fountaine Pajot Bahia catamaran only in 2009. But they know how to please guests. Jeff is a trained marine biologist, and he takes the lead on snorkeling excursions where you might see turtles, parrot fish, flounder and even barracuda (he can also accompany you on diving excursions with his underwater camera). Sandy will gladly teach a yoga class on the beach or take you for a hike, as we did on Waterlemon Cay in St. John, site of an old rum factory.

This is the Caribbean you came to see: Pristine, secluded and gloriously beautiful.Sandy also produces endlessly satisfying three-course meals in the tiny galley, with dishes like tuna ceviche on homemade wontons, lobster curry and Jamaican jerk chicken (her recipes are in the cookbook Dining on Deck). And she bakes; coconut orange muffins, made-from-scratch chocolate cake and cheesecake are just some of the decadent options.

If your life doesn’t revolve around meals, as mine admittedly does, there’s plenty of action, too. The itinerary is largely up to you and Captain Jeff (with input from Mother Nature), so you can plan your days around whether you want to snorkel, dive, get a suntan or hike into the jungle. If you brought the kids — and this is a perfect trip for families — Jeff can use the tandem boat to zip them around on an inner tube while you’re left in peace to read on the deck’s hammock.

But mostly, the idea behind doing a charter vacation is to experience the best the Caribbean has to offer. And with Sandy and Jeff as your guides, you’ll find it. The catamaran can slip into bays and inlets that are undiscovered by the general population, leading you to caves, uninhabited islands and fish-filled coves that you’d never see if you were staying in a hotel. So come aboard — the sailor’s life is waiting.
How to get there

Flights are available to Cyril E. King Airport (STT) in St. Thomas and Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) in Tortola (BVI) from major U.S. cities on a variety of carriers. Private van transfers are available to/from STT on St. Thomas for approximately $7 per person (plus an additional $2 for each small bag or $4 for each large bag), each way, and can be arranged through the Magic Inspiration staff. Taxis are also available to/from STT, about a quarter mile from the marina, for approximately $10, each way. Alternatively, guests who fly into EIS on Tortola will be picked up at Trellis Bay, which is within walking distance from the airport.
