Hilton HHonors - List of Hilton HHonors Properties with Free High Speed Internet Access

I was wondering which hotels in the Hilton chain have the fastest and most reliable high-speed internet connections. I am looking to get away to somewhere, I don't really care where, and I want to be able to work on the internet reliably and fast.

Thanks,
Greg

As ACORD mentions in the above thread, the Hilton Tokyo's internet connections are very fast. The catch is that you have to pay high rates for the rooms that are equipped with the RINKS internet system (Business and Executive Floors), but if you are a Gold or Diamond, you should have no problem upgrading.

Hilton Times Square had high speed as of 1/3/01 $10/day. Seems as if most of the Embassy Suites I stay in have it also, i believe also $10/day. Hampton Inn Vancouver (Beautiful hotel for a hampton, nice gold room upgrade too) had high speed for free as of Jun 01. Most of the rest I cannot remember as to just quickly check e-mail its usually just as easy to use the dataport.

I posted this before, but really would like to know given that I just got equipped...

I've read all about high speed internet access at this hotel or that hotel, but what about a comprehensive list of all Hilton-related properties with high speed internet access?

Anyone have such a list or know where to find it?

I recall seeing such a list of all such HGIs on their website in the recent past (but cannot find it right now), and hear that the plan is in place for all HGIs to have it by end of 2003 (read in links below).

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum57/HTML/005906.html
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum57/HTML/005536.html

But meanwhile, where can we get fast access at all Hilton-related properties?

There doesn't seem to be any quick way to find out (other than to search each hotel's webpage, ask you here at FT about a specific property, or call each hotel to ask!). Please tell me I'm wrong.

I too would find this incredibly useful. If you're not wrong, maybe we should start a directory thread here?

I, also, would like such a list, but compiling the information would be difficult, unless it was done by Hilton itself. Right now, it seems like there are a lot of factors and variables that are difficult to quantify, and it seems like things are always in flux at the local properties. Some properties claim to have high speed access, but "its not working right now; our ISP went broke". Others have it, but only through the tv, or in the "remodeled/refurbished" rooms, or in their "business center". Some that do have it require the guest to do extensive tweaking with their laptop to make it work right. Others charge a lot, others give it free. And of course some charge sometimes and give it free othertimes, sometimes based on the room you are in; sometimes for no apparent reason.

In other words, gathering accurate and complete information would be nearly impossible, and what was gathered would get stale quickly. Hence, the only realistic solution would be for Hilton to require all of its properties at all of its brands to place on the property's website DETAILED Internet information saying exactly what they have, who the provider is, and what rooms have it, exactly what it costs and whether, if it is sometimes free what the rules are for that.

When a Hilton has a business center with access, the web page should say precisely what models of computers they have and speeds those computers can run at and can access the net at. The computers should be described by what input/output options they have, e.g., CD-ROM burner, Zip drive, tape drive, etc. Ancillary equipment such as printers and scanners should be listed by brand name and model #.

That's a great link, Beckles, thank you.

While I take your points, amanuensis, I personally am not interested in the business centres, merely whether I can plug my lap top into something fast in my room! That stupid TV thing is completely useless so should be excluded fullstop!

On the FWIW scale, on that site, it says the Downtown JAX Hilton Riverfront (Jacksonville, FL) has high-speed access. It does not, sorry, no luck. However, the Deerwood Park HGI does, as I'm using it right now...

The HGI's are advertising that they will all have free HS access by year end, however I'm still finding the fee at some properties.

Free - HGI DTW Airport
9.95 - HGI Plymouth, MI (a few months ago)

Seems that they need to clarify the issue across the chain. I'm also starting to see HS popping up at more Hampton's, slowly but surely.

Some suggestions for getting online in the U.S. by a certified-gotta-be-online-while-on-the-road-junkie: (feel free to add yours...)

If the HGI you're staying at does not have free hi-speed access yet, it's supposedly going to be in all by the close of 2003. Most HGI's also have "business centers" with a PC, printer and hi speed access for those traveling without the ol' electronic ball and chain.

Sign up for Wyndham ByRequest membership; it's free and can net you 500 AAdvantage miles just for signing up. Among the other bennies, this nets you hi speed internet access while you are a guest there. I've used this about a dozen times in the past year, it's great. Check out www.wyndham.com (http://www.wyndham.com)
if you're interested.

Wayport, a service you're seeing popping up at a lot of Hiltons and other hotel chain properties (and Laptop Lanes) has a $100 prepaid card option that you can purchase good for 20 connects, from the time of checkin to checkout (or noon) the next day. This reduces (ready, math majors?) the per night cost to $5. For a list of hotels and access points nationwide, go to www.wayport.net/locations. (http://www.wayport.net/locations.)

Get a wi-fi card for your laptop if yours is not already wi-fi enabled. Cards are about $50 or less now, and totally worth it. In our industrial park, someone is broadcasting a real nice free signal for me to pickup at work. Thanks, buddy (-ies), whoever you are.

As a paying wi-fi option, T-mobile has "hot spots" popping up all over many Starbucks as well as Admirals Clubs and other in terminal locations. It's 300 minutes for $50 prepaid (10 minutes per connect minimum usage), or $29.95 a month with a 12 month commmitment ( a buck sixty-seven per 10 minute e-mail pickup...hardly enough time to surf FT). I'm trying out a $50 deal right now, and like it very much...quite handy. If you're an AS Board Room member, the SEA board room has hi-speed wireless as well as ethernet broadband available. Others can chime in here about availability at other BR locations....?

For the truly desperate (present company included), there's the ol' USB connectivity kit from the cell phone to the laptop. My faxes are sent to my e-mail, which means I can pick up both virtually anywhere nationwide from my cell phone when nothing else is available. The kits run about $70 from Verizon; I know other services have it as well. Connect time while transferring data is the same as talk time per minute usage. I must warn you, though: it's VERRRRY slow and is great only when no other online means are available.

I saw a sign in the elevator that said all HGI will have free high speed access by the end of 2003, just as the poster above mentioned.

Stayed in Memphis a couple of weeks ago. Nothing was advertised, but y computer had a wireless card and thought I would give it a try. Logged on just fine!

The Hampton advertises the free broadband in the elevators. In the room, the TV tells you how to configure the wireless card. However, this time, I did not have a wireless card. Looked in the "Guest Services" binder and sure enough, there were detailed instructions on how to configure the NIC! It even included screen prints! Reconfigured it and was instantly on. I didn't even have to reboot! BTW, the operating system was XP.

It doesnt say if is free or if you pay, but I have found it is about 80% accurate. Additionally I always call the hotel directly to confirm, and their answers are about 90% accurate. For the most part, I TOTALLY AVOID hotels without high speed internet anymore.

There is a way (I think) to look it up on their web site.

Its something like select United States, with no state checked off and have Internet Access checked off on the bottom.

It works for other countries, so perhaps the US. I don;t have time to try it right now.

This only holds true if the web site is up to date. Some properties may have it but not noted on the site.

I'd narrow down the search to the hotels you want, then call to confirm. There are so many different flavors out there, but in general the HGI's have wired high speed for free in the rooms, some Embassies have high speed but you have to pay for it, the Hiltons are a mix of wired and wireless, etc.

If you have a place that is NOT wired, make sure they don't charge for local calls to connect and get your e-mails, that can quickly add up to much more then a wire charge.

The Hampton Inn in Warren, MI (Van Dyke and 14 Mile) has a big banner advertising free high speed internet. When I was there last week, the jack/interface device was right there in the room. Nice hotel, too. Treated me superbly as a Diamond.

Down the road (Van Dyke and 16 Mile) there's a brand new Hampton Inns and Suites. I'll be staying there after the holidays, so can't report until then. However, if you ever have to hotel-hop (to build up the stay count), this situation is ideal. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Definitely -not- free at the Hilton Cologne, Germany.

1) Wireless is only available at €10 per hour, and only on floors 4 and higher. Supposedly lobby as well but got no signal.

2) Wired is available in their mini-Business Center for €20 per hour. Zero privacy (monitor can't be 6 feet from glass-walled outside hallway).

3) Printouts are €.75 per page for B/W, €3.00 per page for inkjet color.

And no exec lounge to drink my Internet price sorrows away in...

Hi,

I stayed at the Richmond Airport Hampton on 6/11/04. My room was nice, got a bag of pretzels, bottle of water welcome ammenity, the free wireless Internet was high speed unlike some hotels, and the breakfast was well stocked and restocked as needed. Hotel staff were friendly.

I walked over to the Curtyard by Marriott next door just to check it out and while the public areas are noticeably nicer than the Hampton, the resturant/bar was closed at 6PM on Friday night .

I'm glad I Stayed at the Hampton as it was significantly less expensive than the Courtyard.

Good idea for this Hilton to throw in free access. They need all they can get to entice people to stay at this property!

Every Hampton Inn I've been in to date this year has had free high speed Internet-even if they are not listed on the hhonors.com website as having it-even in some obscure places that you wouldn't think would have any Internet access!

Here's a list of Hampton Inns I've been in this year that have free hispeed access:

San Francisco, CA/Daly City
Batesville, IN
Saint Louis, MO Downtown
Tullahoma, TN
Waldorf, MD
BWI
Natchitoches, LA
Greenville, NC
West Palm Beach, FL
Jackson, MS - Coliseum
Cocoa Beach, FL

I'd say 1/2 to 3/4 of those have wireless)

also this year:

Doubletree Guest Suites Walt Disney World (wired 9.99/day)
Doubletree Alana/Waikiki (wireless 9.99/day-just lobby access)
HGI BWI (wired 9.99/day)
Hilton Norfolk, VA (wired 9.99/day)

Well I'm here in the room; very cookie cutter but nice enough. Maybe the "high speed" internet title should be dropped and just "internet" instead.

It's free when you plug into your room using the provided Cat 5 but this is the (lack of) speed!

You misplaced the decimal point. 0.66 MB is approximately 660 KB. But I agree with your main point, that it is not HIGH speed Internet. "High Speed" is a moving target. Used to be that I defined it as anything north of 1.5 MB. Now, I define it as 5 MB or higher.

660 KB and 660 Kb are very different numbers. The listed value was 0.66 Mb/s which is approximately the same as 60 KB/s - or "close" to 660 Kb/s.
