Thai Airways Royal Orchid Plus - Advice needed, GUP or 50%

Hello all, i need some advice which to use when of GUP and 50% Award.

GUP will be Y to J and the 50% will be in F

I'm planning something like this(return trips):

Around late September or in October

FRA-BKK-X for about 2 weeks trip


And in high season around mid December to 3-8 January

FRA-BKK-X

Which one of GUP/50% will be easier to get during high season?

I wont be able to book anything for December yet due to work and it might be good to wait for winter schedule to see what AC flying where!?

And off course i would love to go 380 as much as possible... ;)

I tried to use my GUP to fly in January last year and was refused even though it was still September and there were load of seats left. Ended up losing my GUP because of it.

How do I know if my old man has a GUP available? He said he hasn't received anything in the mail. Is it just in the online system like the 50% off? I have used his 50% to book him a flight home in the middle of the year. What are the restrictions with the GUP and is it round trip?

If I recall correctly, the GUPs book into J class and generally availability of J is pretty good. So, as a general statement, I would say the GUP is probably easier to get than the 50%.

Yet often you'll encounter no award seats for the flights you want, but TG will make an effort for ROP*G's and have the seats released (all depends on your relationship with your local TG office).

My advice is call up TG (speak to the person you know), and enquire about GUP and award availability for both flights. Then you can decide what/how to use your benefits to get the outcome you want.

As to what offers better value from a flights/dollars perspective, this is something only you can determine.

Call up TG and ask what he has left. It will help to know your father's travel history so you can determine what he should have received and what he should have left over. If you post his annual paid miles here, including when he has taken a GUP trip, we'll be able to give you a good indication of what should be in his account.

Hi magnus, I have use the GUP many ways, the best is on combo fares. They are not around all the time but once a month on many routes you will find an economy/business class fare combo. I have bought them on Australian and Indonesian fares this year. When you apply the GUP to these cheapies, the first sector is upgraded to business whilst the second goes into First. I don't need to do it now, but on the 50% travel, if you have the mileage, buy more than you need, the ticket is very flexible and it always was extendable. regards
