Wandered around marriot's website for 15 minutes, can't find anything regarding making an award reservation in another person's name-is it possible?

Yes, you can make an award reservation for someone else. I've always called Marriott to do so. I'm not sure you can do it online.

I've made an award reservation on-line in my name, then called the hotel and told them that a friend/relative would be checking in, not me. Done this twice that I remember, and both times it worked out fine.

Would this work for a non award booking?

Question. Am i able to put a reservation in my name but have someone else check in? This would be nice because i would get the nights and they would get my benefits.

Thanks.

technically, yes.................
ethically and in compliance w the T&Cs you agreed to, no

so, be advised that per your own risk that:
12. In the case of fraud or abuse involving the Rewards Program, Point credit, Miles credit, Reward use, or a participating hotel, the Company and its travel partners have the right to take appropriate administrative and/or legal action, including but not limited to revocation/cancellation of any Reward and/or termination of Rewards Program Membership, and all Miles or Points and certificates (“Certificates”) earned through the Rewards Program may be forfeited and any relevant Membership Account(s) closed.
https://www.marriott.com/rewards/terms/default.mi

but then again, some folks in Southern California brag about doing exactly what you're asking to do.............. and in your part of the world do the FD agents not check the ID of the person checking in vrs the name on the reservation (cause they sure do here)?

Question. Am i able to put a reservation in my name but have someone else check in? This would be nice because i would get the nights and they would get my benefits.

Thanks.

You can?
The wife and I stayed at Renaissance Los Angeles Airport Hotel in April.
She arrived first, so when I made the reservations I asked: "Can she check in first?"
They said - "Yes, but YOU need to stop by the desk, sometime before checkout, or she will be charged the full night rate"

You can. Just notify the hotel that you need to change the name on the reservation prior to arrival, simple as that.

9 times out of 10, the clerk will ask for ID. Not only just to verify that it's you checking in, also that the incidental form of payment belongs to you as well. If you use your reward number on their reservation in their name, most of the time they will get your benefits but you won't get the points.

I just did this at Ritz Carlton Half Moon Bay, but I suspect that we differ in some of the details.

I am using points and a cash upgrade to allow friends to stay at the hotel in two months. I went by the hotel and signed the credit card form in person, rather than faxing it in, and explained to the FD my intentions. Everything is noted on the reservation, including their names in the notes section.

It will stay in my name, I will get the points and stay credit and also the bill.

If you want your guests to pay for it with THEIR credit card, then have them check in with your credit card info and move it over on check out. You might even wait until after the points post before you do so.

The Ritz will take care of us, and I have had some experiences in Marriott hotels where I got credit for rooms booked in another name and another credit card - but it happens very seldom.

The credit card used to pay for it is key to you getting credit.

Just how good a friend are your friends? :)

This is very common and easily accomplished without scamming and putting your credit & status at risk.

Call the hotel (not the 800#) and explain what you want. They will email you a form which you can complete and fax back. It will contain the CC info. and your personal guarantee of all charges as you specify. Generally you can choose to pay for just room & tax or you can choose to pay for all charges. In the former situation, your guests will be asked to provide a CC to cover the cost of incidentals.

But, be forewarned. You are accepting personal liability for everything. Lots of bad threads here about people who did this for others they don't know particularly well. Their "guests" damaged, trashed, smoked in or otherwise incurred significant costs and there was insufficient credit on the CC to cover the damages. Those get charged back to you. (Think drunk guest who totals another's vehicle in the parking lot, etc).

Even when it's close friends -- a great way to end a friendship. "We thought that you would order a normal dinner, didn't think you'd order lobster via room service every night...."

Actually, the name on the credit card is irrelevant. The only thing stored is the CC number and expiration date. The name on the folio is what Marriott Rewards looks at when posting the points, if yours is one they randomly audit in a batch.

If what you say is correct, how does it jive with

No other person except the Member may earn Points for his/her Membership Account
and
A Member is eligible to receive Points/Miles for staying at participating Marriott brand hotels ..... for his/her room ......

when you say its OK to make a reservation under one account for another?

My experience has been that if you are honest about what you are doing there is no problem at all. Two examples-

My best friend got married a couple of years ago, we used my AA miles to fly her and her husband to Maui where they stayed with friends. (They were very cash poor at the time due to starting their own business, etc) We also booked them one night at the Wailea using my husband's points and his Marriott cc. to hold the room. Called the hotel and explained. The hotel treated them awesome, room upgrade, plat arrival gift etc.

We had booked a family trip in San Diego but my husband's travel plans changed so that instead of driving down with us he had to stay longer on a business trip and flew in to SD to meet us instead of returning home to LA. When I arrived with the kids I explained to the hotel clerk that my husband would not be arriving for a couple of days, she left the room on his card, gave me the plat arrival gift, lounge access and 2 keys. No hassle.

It would vary. If redeeming points the guests should all get platinum or whatever status you had. This includes any benefits like lounge access, welcome gift, etc.

When paying for a room, it basically needs your name on the reservation. I asked a similar question before in the forum here and one thing you can try is add your name on the reservation also so there's two names. Call up the reservation to have this added. That other person can check in and tell the front desk you are coming in late if they ask questions. I haven't tried this myself but was told by others it worked for them.

The stay should not post if your name is on the res. but you do not check in.

Also, the hotel 'may' provide your benefits, but they certainly are not obliged to do so.

At check in, when they ID the person checking in the room, (which needs to be done so they know 'who' is actually staying in room) if they hotel changes the name on the reservation (as they should), it's no longer your reservation and you will not earn points/credit for this.

You earn points/credit for your stays and when you are paying (not one or the other) and certainly not when you try to scheme the hotel into giving your benefits to another because you put your number on their reservation so you could collect credit.

People trying the cheat the system only deteriorates it for themselves and others.

Oh good grief. I have NEVER scammed a hotel. I have always been upfront with the hotel about who I was and who my husband was and when he was or was not arriving. You seem to find it impossible to believe that some hotels go above and beyond in treating loyal customers well without there being something dishonest going on.

BKKLEE
Aug 22, 12, 10:42 pm
Absolutely not.......... from personal experiences, I find it highly probable that hotels are going above and beyond in treatment to their guests.

however , and watch out now, you might be agreeing with my premise that these perks belong to your husband and that through the hotel's courtesy they are being extended to you........

[Moderator removed quoted personal attack -- i.e., not by this poster.]

Now I am re reading the OP's post:

Question. Am i able to put a reservation in my name but have someone else check in? This would be nice because i would get the nights and they would get my benefits.

Thanks.

I surely hope I would not get tossed from FT for letting someone know my thoughts about the understanding/experience of the T&C's of hotel programs.

The point is, these are not shared accounts.

However, this OP seems to be in the 'award night for someone else's thread'.

Therefore, my answer will change a bit.
With Marriott you can use your points to redeem for a family/friend (the hotel may or may not extend your benefits, they certainly are not obliged to).

The OP simply needs to put the correct name on the reservation. It's unlikely he/she will get credit if they are not staying in the hotel (per the MR T&C).

I was originally thinking they were asking about a paid stay......so I will have to edit that post. However, my thoughts on trying to get credit for someone else's stay remains the same.

Hi, my dad has booked some award nights for my upcoming vacation on an autograph/ Marriott property (cat 6). He is a platinum elite, however I am not even a member. He is not travelling with us, and the room has been booked in my name.

Would we get any benefits given that the room was booked by a platinum elite?

Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere, but I really could not find info on this.

Most likely yes, but it does vary. Actually Autograph properties (for example the Cosmopolitan) may not extend all the benefits, in other words YMMV.

OP shouldn't expect any benefits as they are extended to the Platinum member, but reality is probably quite different.

I have done the opposite, book a room for my parents and they always receive benefits. I always have my name or my dad/mom's name on the reservation and my Plat number. They have only been asked once (in Amman, Jordan) who the Plat member was and to show their Plat card.

I've done this for friends / family and my account has always been credited with arrival points, even though I was not the guest, and they received whatever the brand generally offered to elites. As another poster mentioned, you might not be so lucky at Autograph, depending on the property.

+1 I have done this as well. I reserve the rooms, but they stay in them. I get the points, and they enjoy the upgrade room. In my case, I've always been present at checkin.

But when I called the hotel and explained that I am not going to accompanying them but requested for Platinum benefits for them they said that is impossible. I talked to 3 different people including a supervisor. Any suggesstions? If not, I would have to cancel it and probably go to non Marriott.

I paid the money and It does not matter who staying in the room If who staying in the room are my family!!, what the importance of attending !

They might give him benefits. The lounge attendants are really nice at that property and I've never seen them check a guest's name or room number to verify if they have access to the lounge. In case they do not give him Plat benefits, he can also buy lounge access.
