Air traffic controller Airways New Zealand has been recognised for its efforts to keep planes flying in the aftermath of last year's February earthquake in Christchurch.
The state-owned enterprise won the Service Provision category at the Jane's Air Traffic Control Awards, announced in Amsterdam today.
Airways chief executive Ed Sims said the earthquake and the effects of the Chilean volcanic ashcloud that passed over the country in June 2010, causing widespread disruption to flights, put significant pressure on the organisation and its staff.
''Despite evacuation of the Christchurch Tower and the widespread disruption to essential services, Airways' crisis recovery procedures were employed and within 90 minutes of the February quake, ATC services were back in place,'' Sims said.
This was despite the fact that staff were personally affected by the devastation, including one worker who was killed.
Airways beat entries from Germany and Canada for the award.
