Hi

Sorry if this is not the right thread but I'm shortly flying AA OKC to ORD landing 8pm and then ORD to LHR departing 09:50 (AM) on Saturday (morning).

I can either get a hotel and/or travel downtown for the night.

Can I book my luggage straight thru and how easy is to to get to and around Chicago?

Thanks
2222.

Not sure about the luggage, but it is very easy to get downtown. Just follow the signs from baggage claim to "Trains to the City". The "L" trains run 24/7. CTA's O'Hare station is in the airport between Terminals 2 and 3.

I'm confused here. Is your OKC to ORD landing at 8 PM Friday, and your onward ORD-LHR departing 9:50 PM Saturday? If that is the case, I would not recommend checking your bag through even if they would let you, which I doubt. That would make this a stopover, not a connection.

Sorry, to clarify... landing 19:55 Sat, depart 09:50 Sunday.

Sat night in Chicago! :)

Cannot comment on thetech. issue of stopover.

If you decide to go to downtown, when you look for signs, do look on the floor as they are prominent.

Suggest you do some surfing to figure out what you want to do downtown as you will be vacating the room earlier than 4 P M.
Shopping, museums, Chicago Architectural cruise, restaurants....

If you do not go this route, there are several 3 to 5 star Airport hotels with shuttles

They should let you check through then. Take the Blue line L to Central Station and Chicago should be pretty easy to get around from there.

In THAT case, if it were me, I would stay with an airport hotel.

Good suggestion. The last time I took the Blue line from Central to ORD, I remember it taking a bit of time. With only a 14 lay over, you might want to stay closer to the airport.

Another option is to go over to the nearby casino in Des Planes. I had a quick overnight in ORD last month and instead of getting a hotel for 4-5 hours, I hit the craps tables. Even if you don't gamble, the people watching is a lot of fun and the food inside is actually pretty decent. Apparently, they now have a free shuttle from the airport too.

Agree. Stay near the airport there are many great hotels right by O'Hare. Personally, I would not check the luggage through even if it were an option.

Based on the time frame, I too would suggest staying at/near the airport and relaxing. I would also pick up the luggage and have it with me and recheck in the morning.

The website says "Enjoy complimentary shuttle service from the Rosemont Blue Line stop". Does anyone know where that is?

Rosemont Blue line stop is first stop when going from Airport to Downown, no idea where that shuttle will be.

OK, then it is a connection, not a stopover. It should be your choice whether to check luggage through or not. You get to choose whether to have your unlocked bag in an out-of-the-way corner in the bowels of O'Hare where any of 200 people can examine it unobserved or whether to retrieve it, keep it with you, and bring it back the next morning.

I agree with those who recommend getting a hotel room near ORD. You have 14 hours on the ground. Figure in your hotel room by 2130 Saturday, alarm set for 0630 Sunday.

There is a frequent subway-style train (the Blue Line) that will take you downtown from ORD. It's a somewhat tedious near one hour journey with many stops, but it's very cheap and it's pretty reliable. From ORD T1/2/3, you can reach this train via signposted underground passageways. Ditto for your return on Sunday morning.

Or, you can pay around $40 each way for a taxi that will probably take around 25 minutes. There is also a downtown hotels shuttle bus service but I dislike such things so know no details.

Bear in mind also that if your luggage has been checked through, you won't need to present yourself back at ORD until say an hour before your Sunday morning flight. So if you wanted to stay downtown, you wouldn't need to leave terrifically early in the morning.

But if you want to do the casino thing, Rosemont station is the first stop out from ORD on the same train that goes downtown.

Just got back from a weekend in Chicago on business. You are talking about the Rivers Casino, which is about a mile east of the Rosemont L stop on River Road. There is a bus pickup area right below the train stop, in the parking lot.

If you have ~14h, you might consider staying in Rosemont, which is minutes from ORD and most hotels offer free shuttle service. I stayed in the Doubletree O'Hare for a night before moving downtown but there's a Hyatt, Intercontinental, Hilton, Marriott, etc. all on the same street. Also some nice restaurants on River Road - I highly recommend Gibson's Steakhouse.

There are numerous hotels in and around the airport at ORD. I might recommend that you decide with whom you like to get points (hotel wise) and see what is out there. There is a good selection of mid to upper end hotels at ORD. Rosemont is very close to the airport and that is where a lot of them are.

And I second Gibsons. Great Chicago steakhouse.

I highly recommend Gibson's Steakhouse.

+1, gorge oneself on great food, roll up to room, run bill to folio to get HH points. Deosn't get much better than this.

Darn right (Gibson's is located at the Doubletree). ^

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but the food there is truly an experience. Best steak I've ever had in my life, and a single dessert will feed 4 people or more (so be prepared to bring back leftovers).

there are many hotels surrounding ohare. OHARE HILTON is just 2 mins walk from the terminal cos it is inside the ohare airport area. other hotels near by are about 1 to 3 miles. there are 5 star like hyatt, westin and 3 star hotels too. the area is called ROSEMONT. rate is bit cheaper in ohare area hotels then in downtown which is 18 miles from ohare airport. there is a red line train service inside the terminal that will take you to downtown about 50 mins. or you can take a cab just outside the terminal $40 before tip. depending on traffic, it can take form 20 mins to 1 hour.

You could eat at Hugo's at the casino, which is owned by the same family as Gibson's. Downtown, Gibson's and Hugo's are side by side and share a kitchen. You can get the same steaks as Gibson's with a more extensive seafood selection at Hugo's....and you can't go wrong with the crab cake app and any bone-in cut. Enjoy.

If you are checking your luggage through, either blue line into the city and night of partying or hitting up the casino are good choices. If you are collecting you luggage and still want to do an all-nighter, you might try leaving your luggage at the Airport Hilton. I've left luggage plenty of times when I was staying there and they never asked for confirmation .... I imagine a nice tip when dropping off would ensure that no questions are asked.

It's the Blue Line, not red. The red line runs north/south and doesn't go anywhere near the airports.

There's no "Central Station" on the Blue line.

No, it doesn't. More like 40-45minutes.

And here's another suggestion for the OP:

Actually it is called BLUE line. The distinction is important as Chicago does have a red line as well which does not come to the airport, but someone asking for information about a red line downtown could get misdirected and miss flights.

In this particular case I too would recommend OP to stay near the airport. Chicago's nightlife is not worth it under the circumstances. :)

If you are in the bar hopping/partying mood, then I would forgo the hotel. You can go to the city, get some food, check out the nightlife, go back to Rosemont on L, spend some time in the Rivers Casino, then head to the airport. If your flight departs from T3 (like AA's morning flight to LHR does), you can buy a day pass to Admiral's Club and take a shower there. If you depart from T5 and have no access to a lounge there, you can take a shower at the Hilton (I think they still sell day passes to the Athletic Club).

Blue and Red 'L' lines run 24x7, giving you options for getting around the city, and many buses run until late. You can get a 3-day pass at the O'Hare CTA station (no day passes are sold there for some reason) and it should cover most of your transportation needs.

Then, sleep on the way to London and get ready to party there.

That, I believe, is a personal opinion. :) Since OP is going to be in the city on Friday night, I think there will be plenty of options, from good blues to stunning views to people watching in the Viagra Triangle.

I second that - the nightlife in Chicago is incredibly diverse and has literally hundreds of options. You could catch a play (http://broadwayinchicago.com/), eat at a world-class restaurant (http://chicago.metromix.com/restaurants), take in the city from the restaurant or bar atop the Hancock Building (http://www.signatureroom.com/), go clubbing (if that's your thing), or listen to some great live music. Plenty to do at whatever speed you roll if you want to go downtown!

The Intercontinental ORD in Rosemont is often available on a PointsBreak for 5K. Near the Blue Line stop.

Super bargain if it's going on.
