I've noticed there's an airline operating from Ulan Ude, UUD called
Bural (Buryat Airlines Air Company).

According to wikipedia.org it has 5x Antonov An-2
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bural

Trouble is, I can't find any information on route maps / schedules / pricing / reservations anywhere..in Russian or English.

I found one phone number: «Buryat airlines» Tel.: (3012) 21-79-86.
however I don't speak nor understand Russian.

Does anyone know of any web presence this outfit might have?
I've never flown an An-2 and they look like an experience!

I'm guessing the An-2's would be used on short-hops so could be very useful in getting about too.

You can find a schedule on the Ulan Ude Airport website. While the website has an English version, the schedule isn't included. I'd try running this through Google Translate:

http://airport.tmweb.ru/passengers/Shedulernew/index.php

With a lot of the smaller, regional airlines in Russia they have only minimal web presence, if any at all. You might try a travel agent in order to book a ticket, but I would say it's very likely that tickets are only sold at the airlines ticket offices.

Russian aviation geeks seem to think the only scheduled service on an An 2 is from Kostroma (KMW) to a couple villages out in the woods.
Looking up Bural flights on www.polets.ru (the web interface for Sirena, the GDS of choice for smaller carriers in Russia/CIS), it seems it's all on An 24s.

Some more contact info from polets.ru
Phone +7(3012) 22 76 55, 22 76 61,22 79 80, 22 79 59.
Fax +7 (3012) 22 77 85
E-mail avia@burnet.ru

Oh and I think anything which is on polets.ru should be bookable online via agent.ru (a very reputable TA). Although you might have to struggle with smaller landing strips having no IATA codes and such.

A shame about the Ан-2, although I have since discovered a private owner of one not too far away which is quite ironic.

Meanwhile in Russia, I've discovered an Ан-140 from Ulan-Ude to Yaktusk and then onwards to Khabarovsk (possibly with a CRJ) which might be an interesting alternative.
Flight would be 4 hrs 40 mins though, so not sure if that's because the props are slow or if it makes a stop somewhere?

Now to work out if I can afford it.

5 hours on an exotic type between two of the more intriguing places in Siberia? Sounds nice. But...

Agent.ru says it's 16784 RUB one-way to YKS. That's, uhm, wait for it, 361 quid. Welcome to the wonderful world of thin monopoly routes in the middle of nowhere

yes, I saw that price, horrified me rather...it was more the onward cost to KHV...
total of over £680! Aeroflot fly return Moscow - Yaktusk for that price!

If I start my journey back to Europe from KHV instead of UUD or ULN (or thereabouts), I save about £200 in taxes, so I'm putting that towards to cost of the domestic flight...but the combined price is still too heafty to pay at the moment so I was playing with the idea of doing one-way by boat up the Lena to Yakust (over three days), but even that looks fairly pricey.

Are you taking the Transsiberian to KHV and flying on a Z2-Z1 redemption out of it? If you're into some really out-of-the-way places, maybe you could find something nice along the route? Whichever way you slice it Yakutsk is just a very expensive place to visit. (And I'm not really sure SU fly there at all).

No no, I'm keeping away from the train line except brief overnight city-city routes...far too touristy for my liking otherwise. :)
I could be tempted to try the BAM instead, but would have to find a way to get to it first.

My arrival into Russia will be at Chita and I was going to come back from Ulan-Bator but then I spotted IreAero operate a service to KHV which (when it was an An-24) could be had for eqv. USD $100.
Then I saw they had a routing via Yakutsk as well...but they've started using CRJ's so the price is a bit more, but still in the £220 range if I'm prepared to take the less interesting direct route.

I know a few people in KHV so it would be good opportunity to visit them but otherwise was going to come back from Mongolia (but not enough time to see much other than Ulan-Bator so a bit pointless I think).

If I make it to YKS I'm hoping to arrange a short stay with some locals - just a day or two.

Maybe I'll see about prices from Ulan-Ude/Улан-Удэ to Taksimo/Таксимо and then catch a train-bus north to Yakutsk, or Ulan-Ude/Улан-Удэ to Nizhneangarsk/Нижнеангарск which is another possibility (only an An-24 though). These are only c.2 hour flights so I'm hoping they'll be a lot more affordable.
I purchased a one-way OHH-KHV from a local agent last year which came to RUB 11500 so hopefully I can find something.

I stand corrected on the MOW-YKS route; I should have said S7.
I was thinking of SU because I originally took a look at going to PKC and SU do a MOW-PKC flight but the costs to explore once there seemed rather too high, so I'm saving that for a future occasion.
