Space Shuttle is planning to arrive at JFK on April 23rd, a Monday, and planning to be at Kennedy for 2 months before being transferred to the Intrepid. This would be a fun spotting opp for JFK. Wonder what they flight number will be. :)
Don't wanna be a killjoy but it's a bit dissapointing they choose for NYC the shuttle that never went to space...

Given NYC never launched a shuttle, it's better than the shuttle they're putting at Mission Control in Houston.....

SPACE SHUTTLE Enterprise ARRIVES IN NEW YORK CITY
Landing at JFK Airport Marks First Leg of Historic Trip to New Home at
Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
The Space Shuttle Enterprise, the original NASA orbiter that paved the way for America’s successful space shuttle program, will officially arrive in New York City and mark the start of its historic journey to its new home at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum when it touches down at John F. Kennedy Airport on Monday, April 23. The shuttle will be welcomed by an assembled gathering of invited guests, including school children from across the tri-state area and elected and community leaders.

note: Shuttle Enterprise never went on orbit.
There will be a flyover New York City by the SCA/Shuttle combo.
More information and pictures to follow.

Sad that it's postponed, but I'd rather have good weather when it comes so we can actually see it!

I was just informed that the Space Shuttle's trek to JFK will include a fly-by of EWR at approximately 10:15am Wednesday. No details as to how low, possible view points, or the like.

Hopefully this generates a lot of buzz up there...
In Washington last week, the arrival of the Discovery was an amazing sight to see...
It flew over my place (I live within walking distance to Reagan) and I got some pictures, but from the traffic and live news reporting, it was a mess outside from all the spectators!
I'm guessing the people up there will love it as much as down here, however it is New York :-)
Good luck for viewing the NASA 747 & Enterprise, I've got some nice pictures of that shuttle from when it was at our museum here at Udvar-Hazy!

Anybody have thoughts on the best place to view?
I think it's supposed to do fly-bys of the Statue of Liberty and the Intrepid, so I assume it's going up the Hudson. Therefore I'd figure anywhere along the river that's not obstructed should be good.
But I was also thinking of maybe buying a ticket to Top of the Rock to save myself the schlep over to the river (I work a block away from TOTR). Seems the TOTR has a pretty good view of the air over the Hudson:

You will get a better view from Top of the Rock since you'd be higher than the plane as it lands, and you can see it from when it enters the horizon all the way till it lands at JFK. At ground level on the west side, you'll lose sight of it when it goes behind the buildings of Manhattan.

I'll be at
most likely at the Intrepid Museum (http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/LatestNews/April-2012/Space-Shuttle-Flyover-and-Arrival-Delayed-until-Ap.aspx) herself to watch it but am also receptive to, if others want,
the end of the Hyatt Regency Jersey City pier (specifically (40.71689961566658, -74.030020236969) (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=(40.719534278094905,+-74.04263734817505)&aq=&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=57.292148,114.169922&vpsrc=6&ie=UTF8&ll=40.7169,-74.03002&spn=0.00679,0.013937&t=m&z=17))
or, less likely due to lack of creature comforts, at Liberty State Park's 9/11 monument's eastern end (specifically (40.708279312457385, -74.0344512462616) (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=(40.719534278094905,+-74.04263734817505)&aq=&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=57.292148,114.169922&vpsrc=6&ie=UTF8&ll=40.708279,-74.034451&spn=0.003395,0.006968&t=h&z=18))
after 9:45a on Friday coming in by ]PATH (http://www.pathrail.com/) (unless NASA changes in which case, I'll edit this post).
Anyone else going?
Know of any others doing the same? Debating how to get the NASA TV audio stream (none available on the cell, I fear) and/or LiveATC on my cell.

Nice view from a roof deck in Upper Manhattan too, just north of the George Washington Bridge.

The views from the west bank of the Hudson were also nice, but troublesome. From the published reports, we were expecting to see the transport flying over the Hudson, so had eyes (and cameras) pointed in that direction. The actual flight path was actually a few blocks in over Jersey City both coming and going. I got a few shots with my PNS.
themicah, I got lunch in the concourse about an hour ago and it was packed with people waiting for the TOTR.

themicah, I got lunch in the concourse about an hour ago and it was packed with people waiting for the TOTR.
We had timed tickets (purchased late last night once it looked like a go) and arrived on the top observation deck just as the SCA appeared in the southern sky. If you have timed tickets for TOTR the waits are pretty minimal. It took less than 15 minutes to work our way through all the lines and elevators to the top.
At the top there was a small section roped off for press photogs and a handful of amateurs with long lenses some of whom were clearly Shuttle spotters. But the vast majority of folks seemed to be ordinary tourists who had no clue they were in for such a treat.
We got to see it approach from the south, fly up the Hudson, loop around Tarrytown, fly back down to the Verrazano, perform fly-bys at EWR and LGA and then out to TRACON on Long Island at which point the kids were getting cold and hungry and mrsmicah (always the reasonable parent) made me leave so I didn't get to see it land at JFK. But it totally made my week.
I just had my little Canon S90 and was juggling cranky 1yo babymicah and overly inquisitive 4yo jrmicah with mrsmicah, but managed to get these:
https://www.intrepidmuseum.org/Shuttle/Events.aspx tells me that she's at JFK for a good 5 weeks. I fly in on Sunday - any chance I might get a glimpse? Where should I be looking? I assume it takes a couple of days to get it off the roof and into a hangar!

My dad had a good camera with a long lens, so hopefully we get some good ones from that. His boss had recently retired so we took up residence in his corner office for an hour waiting for the flyby. We had a good view of downtown and all the way up the Hudson so it was perfect. Pretty awesome!

I wonder if we had any flyertalker on DL1529 JFK-LAS today. That was the aircraft holding short of 31L for the shuttle to land. They held short for the low pass and for the final landing. Must have been quite a sight. If there is ever a good reason to be delayed 15 minutes for takeoff, this has to be one of the best.

I believe it's going to stay on the back of N905NA for a while until they can get the equipment they need from IAD shipped up to JFK to demate the two.
I think (not sure where I read this) that it's going to be in this hangar (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=40.647499,-73.805083&num=1&t=h&z=16) in the southwest corner of the airport (not very close to any of the terminals).
On another forum someone said that if you park at the Lufthansa Cargo parking lot, there is a pedestrian bridge over the highway (http://g.co/maps/nxhpt) that has a direct view of the shuttle area.

While in Asia, CNN had pictures of the shuttle being flown to NYC. I arrived at JFK last night and the taxi driver said the space shuttle can be seen from the road. Here is my driveby photo of it still piggybacked in the hanger

We landed shortly after it landed and the pilot slowed almost to a stop so we could see it. This was the view from my window - really awesome, especially since I was bummed that my schedule didn't let me fly in earlier to see the flyover.

This is all correct - got a very good view from the cab as we left the airport this afternoon!

As of last night, that same half-in-the-hanger view was available from the AirTrain that runs between the JFK Terminals and the subway.

Indeed, and better still when I flew out last night we used 13R so I had a cracking view from my window seat on the plane as we taxied down there.
Looks magnificent on the back of a 747 and gives a sense of scale too.

Hi all!
Former DC resident, first time NYC visitor here. I just landed in JFK and am going to the West Side of Manhattan, around 46th st and 12th Ave. I see the wiki says I can take the Airtrain and LIRR to NYP, but I'm something of a "passenger of size", and may not be able to fit through the doors of the train. In fact, I don't think I can even fit in the Queens-Midtown tunnel. I had to charter my own 747 just to get here. Is there a ferry service from JFK? Or can the locals suggest some other way?
Thanks!

No ferry service from JFK to Manhattan. If you honestly don't think you can fit into a subway in which two doors open up for entry/exit, then you are left with hiring special car service to fit your size.
I'm pretty sure this particular passenger is going to have charter a barge.
