Europe - 100% refundable ticket out of Schengen

Will be flying one way to Europe later this year...and planning to buy a 100% refundable ticket out of the Schengen area as I am not sure of my Schengen exit date/place. Want to have a ticket in case I need proof of onward travel.

Many options exist but the ones I've thought about are --

1) United-Continental - Buy and cancel in 24 hours (If not buying a fully refundable tkt)

I prefer not to have time pressure of 24 hours...so buying another ticket and canceling it at my leisure - ONLINE - seems best...

So European airlines seem to be the best bet, as any US carrier would likely be an intercontinental ticket.

2) Flight from Paris - London - about $350 for a 100% refundable fare on Air France, others?

3) Eurostar to London - $425 for 100%.

Anyone have any thoughts on which airline & route is best or train route/website for doing this. Online convenience, fastest refund, lowest amount to temporarily charge, etc...

Looked at raileurope.com (To Croatia), but not all their fares are 100% refundable (85%). No LCC as those are non-refundable tickets. Checked a few other carriers - Adria, SAS, Air Berlin, Lufthansa -- but their refundable fares are quite a bit higher. Eliminated KLM, Austrian, and British Air for various reasons.

Guessing an airline ticket to the UK is best or some kind of train to Croatia.

Avoiding Bulgaria, Romania as destinations as they may join Schengen later in 2012.

Checked ferry lines from Holland-UK and Calais, France - Dover, but they all have some kind of cancellation fee...for those routes / fare classes available.

DFDS Seaways is the cheapest at 15 GBP or so...for cancellation. Stena Line only gives back up to 75% of the ticket...

Wouldn't it make more sense to try and find a EUR 9.99 Ryanair ticket to the UK or Ireland and just write it off if you're not going to use it?

Why pay anything when it isn't necessary.....no worries about a charge on the CC for a week or so. I think I've made a decision...

As for Ryanair -- they have so many hidden charges...that the 10GBP tkt would be who knows what...their website is very annoying to me..it is so cluttered and pains me to even navigate it. I've never flown them due to being a USA passport holder...which causes complications (Read hefty fees) with them - though I think that is mainly checkin related...last time I checked into flying with them.

Have flown Easyjet, Wizz Air, Air Asia, Air Arabia, and various other LCCs I can't remember the name of - so certainly no stranger to LCC airlines or differing website designs. But how annoying I find Ryanair probably would in principle prevent me from even giving them $20-$30US....

Easyjet has similar fares on some routes I just noticed though...

If you aren't willing to investigate the Ryanair website to find what the actual price will be, why would you think anybody is willing to put the effort in to help you circumvent immigration controls.

European airlines are no longer allowed to advertise fares exclusive of fees and charges (with the exception - for now- of debit/credit card charges) so if Ryanair is advertiting a EUR 9.99 special then 9.99 (plus card charges) is what you pay.

If you are buying a ticket out of Schengen then your ticket will be charged in local currency, not USD, and you could easily lose more than EUR 9.99 on exchange fees....
