It now says:

Gold Elite level is achieved after completing 10 qualified nights OR by earning 10,000 points* for stays at any Best Western branded hotel worldwide during a calendar year.

Platinum level is achieved after completing 15 qualified nights OR by earning 15,000 points* for stays at any Best Western branded hotel worldwide during a calendar year.

Diamond level is achieved after completing 30 qualified nights OR by earning 30,000 points* for stays at any Best Western branded hotel worldwide during a calendar year.

* Applies to residents of the U.S., Canada, Caribbean, Asia, South America, Central America, the Middle East and South Africa only
But it doesn't say what kind of points count, nor is my elite tracking at My Profile showing how many points toward elite status I've earned so far this year (it only shows how many nights).

...and you don't have a European profile, right? It seems to exclude European members :(

Interesting question. So far BW has not have different point categories. With the bonus, the feedback 250s, it seems to me to get/keep higher status is much easier with points.

Not to mention partner earnings, like Avis with 1750 points for a 2-day rental, the BW MC card, or transfer from AMEX MR or Diners Club.

Note that if they do it this way, it wouldn't be the first hotel program to do so. Priority Club lets you earn status from all points, no matter how earned. (For two years running, I've requalified for Platinum Status at Priority Club without making a paid stay, just getting some points one way or another.)

But the way it's phrased in what I quoted in post 1, it seems like it might mean just points earned on stays.

It seems that every single thing (promo, change in policy, etc) that BW announces it does so confusingly, always leaving more questions than answers...

I just came across the elite qualification by points today when looking at Best Western site. I was hoping to find clarification on the issue of whether points must be from hotel stays or if partner activity qualifies.

Best Western customer service agent thought partner activity qualified, but I am not convinced yet. Who can trust customer service agents?

Time to hit Twitter Best Western I guess for the real answers.

Twittering will get you the same kind of people (customer service) as phoning. I don't see why Twitter would get "realer" answers.

The real answer would be when you are able to somehow verify how many points you have toward elite status, and then you compare that to the total you earned that year. But since BW's website doesn't show you that at present, the only way to find out would be to ask the same customer service, and then if you don't trust that they gave you the right answer (ie, that they didn't just look up your total point earnings for the year and assume that that's what the points-toward-elite counter would be), then you've gotten no further.

So perhaps a better question to ask (call or twit) is "when will my progress toward elite status via points be shown online"?

I did get a prompt response via Twitter from Best Western.

Hotel stay points only count for elite qualification.

Partner activity points do not count.

That's wonderful. But how do you know that that's more accurate than what you were told over the phone?

That's what I, if brought in as a temp to work on the Twitter support page, would have guessed at, simply by reading the language on the T&Cs. So just because that is the answer, that doesn't prove it's more correct than what the phone reps told you.

Like I said, the proof will be in the pudding: Ask your Twitter people when you will be able to see a count of your points progress toward status online (or some other way). (There is currently no counter at BW's site that I know of that tracks your poitns, total, hotel stay, or otherwise, for the year.)

Besides, "hotel stay points" (even if correct) is not clear enough either. There are multiple types of points that can be earned on hotel stays (especially if you're elite, a AAA member, etc).

Could be proved by getting someone with no status to get the credit card and see if they end up at Platinum after getting the 16K points. I do agree that a counter in your account would be nice.

Good point on the multiple types of points that can be earned on stays. I could even argue that the extra points from the credit card for spend at Best Westerns are "hotel stay points".
