Got a NCL-BKK-MEL-LAX-ORD-JFK-NCL trip upcoming.

Is it worth me getting a round the world ticket or are there not enough segments?

I don't know. Are you intending to fly coach, business, or first? Will you be gone at least 10 days? Have you priced out the segments individually and compared them to the cost of an ex-UK xone4? Can you start from another country in EUR such as ex-AMM or ex-TLV which are cheaper if flying business?

Thanks.

Yeah i'll be away over 10 days sure with breaks along the way for meetings/ site visits.

probably coach but would be good to have the option to upgrade at at check in for certain segments such as LHR-BKK and MEL-LAX

Want to keep everything OW if possible.

The general rule is you can only upgrade a flight operated by & with a flight number of an airline with the miles/avois/points of that airlines freq flyer program. There are exceptions such as the BA/IB/AA arrangement. So for MEL-LAX only possible to to use QF points on the QF flight number (but the chance of an upgrade is very low to nil)

Even though not relevant to OP, one can use CX miles to upgrade on AA and BA, but not vice versa.

For this specific routing in economy, the BA/QF Discovery fare will be much, much cheaper than the LONE4 fare. It could easily come in at £1k cheaper. You would need to book with a travel agent or with BA/QF over the phone. To my knowledge, there are no online portals which offer this product.I was able to get the QF site (UK portal) to issue a UK origin QF/BA "walkabout" RTW fare last year (MAN-LHR-HKG-MEL-LAX-LHR-MAN). Had to use the Multi-City option.
