I used approximately 1,850 points to pay for a one week rental at VCE (Venice, Italy - Marco Polo Airport) in a phone booking with Hertz. It took a about 25 minutes to complete the reservation. The Hertz phone rep advised that the point cover only the base rental fee and not any taxes, surcharges, etc. She further indicated that I could pay for those ahead of time and get -- for no additional cost -- LDW/CDW and Theft protection. That seemed like a great idea, so I paid the $167.60 in VAT, taxes and fees. Incidentally, the Hertz international desk apparently does not have the ability to email vouchers. The desk had to fax me mine. The voucher looked fine and clearly states that it includes LDW/CDW and Theft Protection.
The understanding was that I would not have to pay any additional amounts in connection with the rental other than a child seat, which would cost e15. We arrived and picked up the car with a moderate delay. The car was fine, and I returned it full of gas.
Hertz charged me full price for the week's rental, as if I had not used any points. In addition, I was charged for both CDW and Theft Protection. The points had been deducted from my account. I called Hertz, and after some research to determine whether both a voucher and points my be used on a single rental -- YES in Europe, but NO in the US, apparently -- Hertz agreed to refund the base rental. Hertz is researching the rest of the charges.
I expect to get most of the ill-charged cash back, but only after a run around. Based on this experience, I value Hertz points less.
