SkyTeam - Delta's Sky Miles, KLM's Flying Blue, or What?

Hi,

I make about four AMS-MEX-AMS flights a year; I tend to use KLM, and Continental indistinctly (I go for the lower price I can find) hence my frequent flyer (FF) miles account seems to be stuck and not growing very much.

Therefore, I was wondering which FF programme should I opt to consolidate my miles with. Not that the airline industry is eagerly giving away free flights/upgrades, but KLM seems to be particularly stringent with their miles.

Should I opt for KLM and their stingy Flying Blue programme (AMS has became a somewhat frequented airport by me and perhaps will become my home airport) or should I opt for Delta's Sky Miles (MEX is my home airport)? Should I even consider Aeromexico's (AM) Club Premier (75% miles when booking in V,L,W, and P) even though I almost never fly with them? Or should I stay within the Star Alliance's realms and stick to Continental's OnePass?

I hope that my question is not too .

Thank you in advance for your help.

Your location is showing as the United Kingdom. If you live in the UK why would you consider your home airport as Amsterdam or Mexico City? Furthermore, if you do indeed live in the UK, you may wish to consider Oneworld (although I'm not a huge fan if it) Alternatively if you like Continental (aka United) and travel around Europe too (assuming you live in the UK) then Star would give you the best value having Lufthansa, Swiss, BMI, and the list goes on. Airline quality-wise it is the bets of the three alliances with the likes of Singapore, Thai, ANA, and (marginally) Swiss. As a UK resident, to reap the full rewards of the FF program, I suggest you choose the Star airline you will be flying most often -- not only the one you use to fly to Mexico City. With most FF programs, 4 paid business RTs from Europe to Mexico City should put you firmly in the next to top tier in terms of elite status. Do your math before selecting.

I used to be plat with KLM, but then they wrecked the program with the notorious fools day changes - at least for Y travellers.
I moved to NW and was Plat there until DL took over and put me in skymiles. DL miles are really easy to get, but the redemption rates are very bad. It takes a lot of work to get value out of skymiles.

Finally I decided to jump to Star and my only regret is that I did not move any earlier.

If UA/CO works for you, then I would suggest you stay with them

Delta tends to be more generous on mile earning rates, so I would go with Delta.

I'll close this thread here as it's cross posted over at Flying Blue and got more response there.
