How much would it be from different points in Manhattan? i.e. Upper West Side, West Village, the Theatre District, etc.

What's the best subway station to catch a cab to EWR at?

The best subway station is Penn Station, where you catch a train, not a cab, to EWR.

Officially, the taxi fare from NYC to EWR is as follows:

"For a trip to Newark Airport the fare is:

the amount shown on the taximeter using Rate Code 3 which includes a surcharge of $15.00; and all necessary tolls to and from the destination shall be paid by the passenger."

Since the fare is metered, it will vary by traffic conditions and point of departure. But all other things being equal, it should be less from lower Manhattan, via the Holland Tunnel, than from Midtown. My guess is that you'd be looking at somewhere between $65 and $75, plus tip.

The train from Penn Station (or the bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal) would certainly be cheaper, but might or might not be faster, depending on the schedule. And if you will be going to Newark on a Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, Hertz' special one-way rate from Manhattan to EWR can be considered as well.

approximately, taxi from downtown to midtown is $15, midtown to upper west would be $10. so expect to pay $20 more if from upper west compared to downtown. you'd be better off calling car service with fixed fare, and usually easy to find coupons. as for subway, in manhattan I would think would be vicinity of World trade Center but close to Holland Tunnel, so Canal street on the various lines or near. But you can take the PATH to Newark Penn Station, which will get you a lot closer to EWR, and you can take the taxi from there.

As for subway, in manhattan I would think would be vicinity of World trade Center but close to Holland Tunnel, so Canal street on the various lines or near.Problem with this is that finding an available cab in lower Manhattan is harder than in midtown. The fare is likely to be $8-12 less than from midtown but getting the cab might be harder.

But you can take the PATH to Newark Penn Station, which will get you a lot closer to EWR, and you can take the taxi from there.
Adds a lot of travel time.

I'll echo the previous suggestions to take a car service or the mass transit options. WAY better than a yellow cab.

Unless you're on a peak hour train, I find cab to Penn and then train (2 of them actually) to be stress free and cost effective. Peak Hour trains + suitcases is a bad combination and I usually take the bus on such trips.

For the cab I would also guess about $60-65. Slightly less from lower Mahattan.

If you are against taking the train or a bus to EWR, take car service instead.

+2 - Elite or DIAL car services are approximately the same as or slightly cheaper than a cab and they are inevitably reliable, show up where you want & need them and use the best route to get you to EWR (or JFK for that matter). They will quote you fare at booking + fuel surcharge. Gratuity is, I think, 18% and you can throw in a few bucks to bring the tip to 20%. It's a real stress reducer to have this all taken care of and not have to worry about travel details.

How much travel time would you allow for a ride from Midtown to Newark on a week-day late afternoon? I've got a 7:30pm international flight (not checking bags) and currently have arranged for a 5:00pm pickup, thinking it would take an hour.

Is this cutting it too close?

Is this cutting it too close?Yes. You are assuming no traffic in the city (I have no idea how close you are to either the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel) and you could be in bumper-to-bumper traffic before you even see a tunnel. You are assuming no traffic in either tunnel and no traffic on the Turnpike to EWR. Last you are assuming quick movement through EWR security. How big is your carry-on luggage? EWR security people are the most restrictive of the 3 area airports. If you're in a rush and then they tell you to check in your bag, you are out of luck.

I'd take the train if I were you. But if you insist on being driven, I'd leave no later than 4. You will still be stuck in traffic but you will be better off.

Are you at least close to the entrance of the Lincoln Tunnel? If you're on the East Side, you'll be sitting in traffic.

Hmmm. I'm at 6th Ave and 53rd St. Could it really take 2 hours to get there?

I'm a 1K flying UA in C, so I assume I would get expedited security at EWR...but I haven't flown out of there in many, many years, so really I have no idea.

(Thanks for the reply, BTW :))

So the OP has allowed an extra 30 minutes for traffic and arriving at the airport 90 minutes before his flight, which ordinarily is more than enough time. Even if the drive were to take an extra 30 minutes (90 minutes total instead of 60), and the line for security were 30 minutes long (instead of the normal 10-15), he'd be there in plenty of time for his flight.

All of that said, I'd probably leave 30 minutes earlier, but that's because I'm just one of those people!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but...

If I'm wanting to get from W26th St (yes, I know it's near Penn Station) to EWR on a Tues morning for a 9:00am flight, will a car service at 6:30-7:00am get me to EWR in plenty of time?

I'm presuming we'll be heading against the early morning traffic so queues for the tunnel etc shouldn't be too bad...

So 6:30-6:45 should work. Just listen to the traffic reports or use GPS so you can see if the Lincoln Tunnel is in a jam (outbound). If so, take the Holland.

(Thanks for the reply, BTW :))You're welcome. :) 6th Ave is going the wrong way for you but 53rd St is not. Could it take 2 hours? Yes. It could also take 1 hour from that corner. It honestly depends on the traffic. At least you're not starting on the east side. You've got to get yourself to 9th or 11th Avenues to get to the Lincoln Tunnel. 11th would probably be better. Make sure your driver doesn't take 7th Ave or Broadway.

If it's a Friday, traffic is that much worse.

Sounds good. 6:30 car pick up it is then.^
