San Francisco - SFO Baggage X-Ray question

Hello all-
Next week I'm flying SFO->LHR on UA and wondering if anyone knows the approximate width of the X-Ray machines that TSA uses? I have a small box containing a couple of cabinet doors that I made for a friend in London and would rather not check it, although it's possible. The box is about 18" wide (by 24"L by 4"H). The opening on the machines seems to be about 18", but this is just from memory.
Thanks..

If your package meets UAs maximum dimensions for carry-on, the X-ray will acommodate it. If it doesn't, the X-ray's size doesn' matter because UA won't allow you to board with it.

it may get through TSA screening but still be considered to big for carry on. Isn't the limit 22"? Especially if the bag is not squeezable into an overhead.

I just measured the box again and it's only 17" wide and slightly less than the dimensions mentioned above. It conforms to the 45" Linear (L+W+H) limit, so I think I'll be ok. And I'm hoping that 17" will fit through the machine!
UA is normally very lax about its carry on baggage limits, with so many passengers being allowed to carry multiple bags and seemingly half their possessions. However, there are sporadic reports of them occasionally being stricter, so YMMV.
I'm sure if the flight isn't full (many at this time of year are not), and you speak to the Gate Agent nicely, there won't be a problem. Just don't push it by also taking your full normal carry on allowance as well.
