I had a crazy thought. But what if Virgin was to acquire Sun Country or just form an alliance/code share with them somehow?
Originally, I was thinking Southwest and Sun Country b/c of 737s, but Southwest wouldn't need the MSP-DFW or MSP-JFK flights. Southwest would remove the first class in Sun Country, which wouldn't please MSP based high yield leisure pax that support Sun Country.
Also, Southwest still has to build up ATL and add metal to markets like CLT before becoming bigger at MSP, which is likely low on the priority list. Southwest is big enough that they could just go ahead and MSP-LAS on their own, add MSP-DAL after the Wright Amendment, without really needing Sun Country. As of today, Southwest still doesn't offer MSP-BWI, even though BWI is connected to every major market east of DEN (with exception of DAL also because of Wright Amendment).
With VX and SY, I see some similarities that both are US LCCs and not big like legacy carriers or Southwest, but still with a focus on domestic travel. They fly to many common airports (JFK, DFW, LAX, SFO, SAN, LAS, MCO and Cancun) but one doesn't compete directly with each other on any route. SY is MSP focused with some DFW flights. Both have a first class offering.
The difference is the aircraft each airline uses. So, I'm sure there more reasons. Any thoughts?
