I had a crazy thought. But what if Virgin was to acquire Sun Country or just form an alliance/code share with them somehow?

Originally, I was thinking Southwest and Sun Country b/c of 737s, but Southwest wouldn't need the MSP-DFW or MSP-JFK flights. Southwest would remove the first class in Sun Country, which wouldn't please MSP based high yield leisure pax that support Sun Country.

Also, Southwest still has to build up ATL and add metal to markets like CLT before becoming bigger at MSP, which is likely low on the priority list. Southwest is big enough that they could just go ahead and MSP-LAS on their own, add MSP-DAL after the Wright Amendment, without really needing Sun Country. As of today, Southwest still doesn't offer MSP-BWI, even though BWI is connected to every major market east of DEN (with exception of DAL also because of Wright Amendment).

With VX and SY, I see some similarities that both are US LCCs and not big like legacy carriers or Southwest, but still with a focus on domestic travel. They fly to many common airports (JFK, DFW, LAX, SFO, SAN, LAS, MCO and Cancun) but one doesn't compete directly with each other on any route. SY is MSP focused with some DFW flights. Both have a first class offering.

The difference is the aircraft each airline uses. So, I'm sure there more reasons. Any thoughts?

Tough fit. SY is leisure-focused, VX a mix of business and leisure. VX doesn't have the most robust schedule, but SY's is thinner still -- some SY stations have less-than-daily service, others are seasonal. And VX has the best inflight products in the US, while SY is bargain-basement all the way.

There is no way to merge SY. Because it was only 73G/NG. I don't think its happening in a distant the future. VX is not going considering to merger SY. Because VX & SY is an independently.

Yea, 737 heavy airlines such as CO or DL would never think to merge with A319/320 heavy airlines such as UA or NW

Personally, I feel VX shouldn't try to tackle any merger. At least in the short term it would probably cause the bleeding to increase. I know nothing of the passenger demographics that SY goes after, but I don't see the two airlines being a good fit. And both are so small, would there be any "economy of scale" benefits ?
Basically the same 2 comments that BearX220 had.

The only merger partner that makes sense for VX is B6. The rest of the airlines just wouldn't work.
