Hilton HHonors - Question re: certificates from Newbie

I've searched this forum as well as the Hilton web site and still have questions about how the certificates work. I've seen the point charts for the various categories of rooms. When I order certificates (or download them) do I need to specify at the time what category room I intend to book? Or, can I order say 4 10,000 point certificates and then use them later to book either 4 nights in a category 1 room or 1 night in a category 4 room. Are all the certificates the same or are some different and designed to only be used for a certain category hotel?

The certificates are for the category hotel you are booking. Since you can download the certificates at any time or the redemption desk can e-mail them to you there is no reason to do this prior to needing them.

I guess I can't combine a certificate for 10,000 points given to me by a family member with a certificate for 10,000 issued from my own account for a one night stay in a category 2 room (20,000 point requirement). Do I understand this correctly? If so, what about booking 2 subsequent nights in a category 1 hotel using (as in the above example) 2 separate 10,000 point certificates?

Booking two nights with two certificates is fine. They don't care where they come from as long as the person on the certificate is on the reservation.
