Swiss International Airlines - [high fuel surcharge] someone explain this to me

I just wanted to book a ticket JFK-ZRH-JFK with swiss in Business. Online (swiss.com) it gave me the following in taxes

Fuel surcharge of 800 Dollars?! Thats crazy, but lets leave this for right now. If I travel ZRH-JFK-ZRH, then its like this

Well, I understand that airport taxes can be diffrent, but why would there be double as much fuel surcharges for the same flights, just the other way around?

In one sense an excellent point- in another this should really cancel out:
The majority of fees on a reward ticket are for fuel surcharges. The pretense of fuel surcharges is that the airline is suffering a temporary spike in fuel prices which need to be recovered from the customer.

Fuel, however, is settled and paid for in US Dollars.

Swiss airlines is operating in CHF- SO:
The exchange rate would explain high taxes, however this should be considerably offset by the fuel surcharge "discount" the airlines could provide based on the gains they are receiving in FOREX. Of course this has never happened- Lufthansa group just Raised their fuel surcharges ignoring the strong positive changes in the EURO in the last two weeks. It is really something that one day will come under regulation, however in the meantime is a way that airlines are taking advantage of their customers.
