India-based Airlines - Earning miles EWR-BOM on AI

Just returned from a trip to BOM on AI nonstop from EWR. Very rare I fly AI so wanted to inquire if I could have earned miles other than AI miles. At check in, the girl said Singapore or Lufthansa miles, is this only for specific routes or system wide for AI.
