Virgin Atlantic Flying Club - Where did the VA upper deck seats go?

I flew BOS-->LHR and back 2 years ago and had great economy seats in the upper level section. Today I look on seatguru and the only upper level seats I see (for the Airbus A340-300 and A340-600) are the lie-flat first class seats. Am I looking at the seat map wrong on seat guru? Was the plane last time a 747 because it doesn't look like the A340 has an upper level. None of the 747 seat maps match what I remember either.

I remember it was a small seating section with 3 seats left and 3 seats right for about 10 rows. We were behind a first class section. The lav was behind us as well as the staircase. Looking down the staircase we could see the bar. It was the best economy seating I ever had on a flight. Very few people to share 1 lav, very quiet area, and the window seats had a ledge to put stuff or put your feet on (due to the curve of the plane on the upper level).

Have you ever seen an Airbus A340 with an upper deck? That'll explain it ... if you flew on a VS 747 on the other hand ... try Googling pictures of an A343 or A346 and you'll see it is all on one deck. VS does infrequently fly a B747 to BOS, just not on the date of your travel.

Note also, VS does not have first class, just economy, premium, and upper (business).

Yes the only common planes that I know of with upper levels are the 747 and a380. So you did fly on the 747.

Oh okay. I remember last time, I was checking my seats every day to make sure I didn't get kicked somewhere else and magically one day there were upper level seats available so I grabbed them. They must have switched to a 747 if they had demand for more tickets or something. Or maybe it was a 747 all along but they weren't selling the premium seats so they let anyone pick them.

How is the VA A340 compared to other carriers for the non-stop trans-atlantic trip? I've also flown British Air a long time ago which was okay and IcelandAir which was okay as well. I liked VA more than both of those.

If you're flying economy it's worth checking whether you'll be on an A343 or an A346, VS flies a mix of these to BOS and whilst most of the service is the same, on the A343 you're likely to get an older, looped, IFE system, which has a much more limited range of entertainment than the newer A346 AVOD system. So go prepared ...

Secondly, the Airbii have a seat plan that is 2-4-2 and many prefer it. If you are travelling as a pair then get online and find a set of 2s, you'll find it better than the 3 across on a 747 or other airlines.

Thirdly, many prefer the Airbii because they can feel quieter and smoother inflight.
