So, I get pulled for secondary screening and they search my checked bag. My shaving cream was confiscated and I was told that this was a banned item. Rationale? It could explode when heated and, as I was informed, the baggage hold is heated. Really....
Of all the years I have flown, this has reached an entire new level of absurdity. I highly doubt that I am the single person who packs shaving cream in my bag.

i like the Lab Series line of men's products for travel: most sizes are exactly 100mL, or less, and the shaving cream is in a tube so the aerosol isn't an issue:
......Shhhhh but I have been carying a full tube of tooth paste with my carry on and nothing said!!!!!!! Shhhhhh

It works better if you pack your razor and your sandpaper collection in separate bags.

I'm confused by this post. How does one get a secondary on a checked bag? The bag goes down a belt. Where did this happen? How did he get called on?

The good news is, we get a new verse to the old campfire song:
In line at the airport they told me,
"Your bag...we need to check it."
When I asked for an explanation,
All I got was a pile of...
Shhhaving cream, be nice and clean.
Shave everyday and you'll always look keen!

How big was the can? Per the FAA (they are defining hazardous materials in this case as aerosols (hairspray, shaving cream, etc.).)
The aggregate quantity of these hazardous materials carried by each person may not exceed 2 kg (70 ounces) by mass or 2 L(68 fluid ounces) by volume and the capacity of each container may not exceed 0.5 kg (18 ounces) by mass or 500 ml (17 fluid ounces) by volume.
Other than if it was over 17 ounces, they were just making up rules again.
Big shock there.

I was at BDA where random checked bags are selected for screening. It was the AC Supervisor who Said it was not allowed.

Aerosols are prohibited in checked bags and always have been (check the airlines' websites, any airline).
That said, 'tis a custom more honor'd in the breach than the observance. I am not familiar with any occurrences of airplanes falling from the sky due to checked shaving cream nor any instances of shaving cream containers exploding, but it's not a silly rule for other types of aerosol.
Think about it.

Shaving cream and hairspray are allowed if they are under the sizes above.
The following are in the allowed column
Toilet or medicinal articles that are hazardous materials such as rubbing alcohol, flammable perfume and colognes, nail polish and remover, and aerosols (hairspray, shaving cream, etc.).
The following is in the not allowed column
Hazardous materials that are not medicinal/toilet articles or described in the other exceptions, such as: spray paints, aerosol laundry starch, insecticides, drain cleaners, camping fuel, etc.
also allowed, with a picture of a can of reddi wip from the FAA's website
Non-toiletry aerosols that contain nonflammable & non-toxic gas –in checked baggage only.
If you check the airlines websites for aerosols, you will find things like (United)
Liquids, gels and/or aerosols (including duty-free items) purchased in the boarding area are permitted onboard the aircraft.
and from American
Example
Aerosol deodorant/hair spray/insect repellent, perfume/cologne containing alcohol, nail polish, nail polish remover, large bottles of acetone such as liquid nails
Allowed For Travel?
Yes
and from Delta
Delta will accept personal care items, such as cologne and hairspray in checked baggage, if less than 17 ounces of each item and less than 70 ounces total without prior approval.
Some aerosols are allowed, and some are not in checked bags. They are not all prohibited.

Some aerosols are allowed, and some are not in checked bags. They are not all prohibited. But always subject to a particular airline's policy is. In this case it was an Air Canada* employee who made the determination, although it appears he was in error unless the aerosol cap was missing.
* So not subject to FAA or CFR regs, although the Canadian equivalents seem pretty much identical.

And Air Canada's policy allows aerosols
Liquids, gels and aerosols (e.g. hairspray, medicines containing alcohol, perfume, and cologne) are accepted in checked baggage provided:
Their total capacity does not exceed 2 L or 2 kg (75 fl. oz.).
The net capacity of each single item does not exceed 500 ml or 500 g (18 fl. oz).
Which with the exception of some rounding issues in the conversion from Ml's to ounces, is exactly what the FAA states.

Maybe they were concerned there was a false bottom in the shaving cream can in which you were trying to illegally transport stolen dinosaur DNA. Do you look like either of these guys?
I travel light - one carry-on and one personal item last me 3 - 4 weeks with no problem (as long as I am not on a dive trip). That means all my toiletries etc. go with me. My Kippie includes a small shaving cream aerosol (56 gm Gillette Foamy) - it lasts the entire trip and fits easily; never a problem with anyone's "security".
I've got to ask cordelli if he has ever seen a two liter shaving cream? ;)

For just $59 you can get a 32 ounce container of shaving cream (though not an aerosol)

This was "checked baggage", right? Must have been a very small airport, checked baggage is usually separate from the checkpoint. One usually drops off checked luggage at the ticket counter and THEN goes to the checkpoint.
Sounds to me like you are a bit confused. Did you mean to say that it was in your carry-on luggage instead?

Sorry, 100% of checked baggage is screened, there is no random screening of checked baggage. At least not in the United States.

I don't believe that it is the OP who is confused.
Bermuda is not part of the United States, nor is AC a US carrier. TSA rules and procedures do not apply in the rest of the world.

I didn't read from which airport he was traveling, apologies to the OP.

I use Art of Shaving at home and on the road. They have a travel size that comes in a squeeze tube.

They pulled that because it exceeds 100ml and you were trying to carry it on.
