In 5 weeks i will be heading to Australia for 3,5 weeks. After 3 nights in Sydney we have rented a car that needs to be dropped off in Cairns after 3 weeks. What can you recommend two guys late 20's to do and see at the eastcoast. Fraser island, great barrier reef were already on the list. But what more is there to do?

Not a whole lot noteworthy between Sydney and around Byron Bay. From there, visit the Gold Coast (tacky but fun), Brisbane (not a whole lot, don't stop for more than a day or two) and then the various points on the Great Barrier Reef, primarily Airlie Beach and Cairns (lots of tourists, nightlife)...

Head north of Carins and check out the Daintree rain forest. At the beginning, you could duck inland a bit and spend some time in the Blue Mountains.

about the nightlife, besides Cairns. Which places can you recommend? Also I wonder if there is a lot to do in Brisbane, how long should we stay?

Brisbane isn't the most interesting place in the world, so spend 2 nights there and hit up Fortitude Valley, plenty of good night life and clubs there for the youngish crowd.

From Sydney to Byron Bay there isn't a whole lot (like ryanbryan said) but if you like to do some fishing and experience some great views when there's plenty of that between Sydney and Byron Bay. Nelson Bay and Port Macquarie are 2 that come to mind.

Flying SYD to Ballina (http://www.ballinansw.com.au/) and then renting a car would be an option. You will miss nothing. For UK people north of the Tweed is where it gets interesting

Beautiful islands, sailing, diving, swimming, the Barrier Reef... Mind you, it's not unique for any of those things, but it is very pleasant.
