The Setai NYC
Has this hotel already been discussed in here? I made a search but did not find out anything relevant in the luxury forum.
Any first hand experience? Can it compete with the top hotel in the city (you name it: FS, Mandarin , SR, The Pierre....).
I saw that this hotel does not come out frequently when people ask for advice about NYC. It is located on 35th street and 5th avenue...I have been told this area is developing well recently....does anyone know if that is true?

You know, it's not bad, provided it is still relatively value priced (stayed there over the summer, and it was a good deal). It is an office building convert, and still has that feel, but rooms were very spacious and service pretty good for NY. Location is a bit of a pain, though.

Thanks for your feedback. It seems The Setai still has way to go before it will (eventually) consolidate its reputation in the city. I might give it a try soon and report back here.

Setai Fifth Avenue - Hotel and Residences - Gwathmey Siegel ...www.gwathmey-siegel.com/portfolio/proj_detail.php?job_id...
Not a office building convertion. Stayed one night about a year ago and really liked it. Wake up call comes with coffee, check in was when you wanted it and check out was the same. Very accomidating. Bathroom was huge but no seperate toilet in such a large space makes for two sharing a problem. Room was huge with great windows. Use of house car to get to fashion show at Lincoln Center was a very nice perk.

I stand corrected (I think a staff member suggested it to me, but who knows). Problem is that it still has the feel of an office building conversion in the hallways. Nonetheless, not a bad choice - neither the best nor worst.

Personally, I do not like the location at all. When I stay in a hotel, no matter the city, I like to walk out and see something that feels like the city I am in. 37th and Fifth clearly does not. Whether it's Columbus Circle for the MO, Central Park South for RC or 57th St for FS, I get a true sense of NYC right outside my door.

I would agree with the previous posters who note the poor location. Is it not in the upper-midtown area with good shopping (Pen, St REgis, Pierre, etc), nor on the UES and that ambiance, and not downtown. The only thing in proximity is the Empire State Building. I would say that the restaurant is quite good, but there is not really a shortage of good restaurants in NYC. I would say that unless they are offering a great deal, you would be better off elsewhere.

But here you have the NewYork Yankees Store just in front of the entry door! :) nothing more then that can give you the vibe of the city you are in!

While it is not "fancy" like CPS or 57th street, there are plenty of things to walk to from this hotel. Korea town is just a few blocks away to the west. Head southeast, and you'll find plenty of truly local restaurants. A little south you'll end up in Gramercy and then the east village. All within a reasonable walking distance.
Frankly, there aren't too many places south of 96th street in Manhattan that you can't find some worthwhile attractions within walking distance.

If I'm going to walk to the East Village from 37th and 5th, what's another twenty blocks? Plus it's not really about what I can walk to, it's about what I "feel" when I walk out of my hotel. At 37th and 5th I only feel get me out of here.
